Looks badass. Reminds me of Ghosts of Mars, Pandorum, and Doomsday. Funny homage to the diner in the opening shot. Lucky Boy is known for their breakfast burritos out here and I would not be surprised if ZS has been there considering he lives in the same city.

That looks like a lot of fun. The use of “The Gambler” in the trailer was a nice choice.

Looks kind of fun. I’m not always one for zombie films, but I’ll check it out for Bautista.

Army of the Dead will screen in about 600 theaters if that interests you and one is in your area.

Closest theater showing it is iPic, so just got my tickets. I would never do this knowing that it would be playing on Netflix the following week, but said fuck it. It's gonna be a weekend of Spiral and AOD.

2 theatres near me are playing it. One is less than 10 minutes away. Tempting. Yes I know that I don’t have to pay for it on Netflix. But this might be something that will be greatly enhanced seeing it on the big screen.

Outside of iPic the nearest place was a Cinemark 20 miles away and a Harkins theater 30 miles away. I was not going to drive that far. I can literally walk to the iPic. It's pricey but iPic is luxury up the ass and it's been at least 10 years since I've gone back.

Bought a ticket to see this Saturday night in Dolby Atmos. It was playing in 2 theaters within a 7-8 mile radius of home.

So it’s going to be a Spiral and Army of the Dead weekend. Really stoked.

While I will watch Army of Dead I doubt I will be paying to see Spiral. You say you are "stoked". I've never really been that way for any horror movie in my life, though I do like the genre. However, when it comes to reviews I often find that I can seldom rely on mainstream ones to give me a good idea regarding whether or not I will like the movie in the genre. Do you pay much attention to reviews when it comes to horror, or do you tend to make your on call when it comes to them?

I say that as a fan of the Saw franchise having seen every movie in the theatre when it was released on Halloween, owning all the movies on physical media and recently re-watching the entire series. Yes, I'm a fan. I don't own 20 different versions of every movie like Xage used to post about here years ago, but I get my entertainment out of them. I choose to see the ones that interest me regardless of the reviews.

No harm, No foul. You're not really a fan of series and don't want to pay to see it, that's your choice. I know some people don't find movies with grotesque violence like the Saw series entertaining.

yes, I know I could wait 1 more week and see this movie for "free" but since I'm being given the option to see it a week early in a theatrical format, I chose to give it some support. Looking forward to a hopefully fun horror/action double feature weekend.

I watched the first two Saw movies and decided they weren't for me. Not a fan of the torture porn genre. I'm more of a fan of stuff like Halloween, The Thing, and zombie movies not based on video games.

Re: Army of the Dead (5/21/2021, D: Zack Snyder) - Netflix

Just got back from seeing it at my local theatre. I had an absolute blast watching this. This was probably my favorite non DC Snyder movie since Dawn of the Dead. Basically it was Dawn of the Dead meets Ocean’s 11.

To me it didn’t feel cheap even though it’s a Netflix original. This was theatrical quality with a B and C level cast, but the ensemble cast really worked well together. Bautista was pretty badass. There’s a very high body count and a lot of the core cast doesn’t make it to the end. There is some light humor that lightens up a few scenes. The Zombies were creepy and sadistic and it wasn’t dark or gloomy and I didn’t see any slo mo. It actually was a very brightly shot movie for the most part.

I recommend it. I’d probably give this a B+ and a 8 out of 10. I thought it was worth it seeing it on the big screen even though I could have waited a week to see it. It looked and sounded great in Dolby Atmos.

Re: Army of the Dead (5/21/2021, D: Zack Snyder) - Netflix

Just got back from my screening at my local iPic and HOLY FUCKING SHIT was this fucking awesome as hell! Yeah yeah, I like ZS's films and have never been one of his irrational haters, but as much as I loved his JL, AOTD was next level shit and I am interested in where this FRANCHISE is going. It's a 2.5 hour film and fully loaded.

Looking forward to Army of Thieves and Lost Vegas now.

Crazy that ZS also pulled a Robert Rodriguez here - he was:

I'm not sure why it was two and half hours, it really didn't lag, but I kinda nodded off 45 minutes in ... the ideas and interesting spin on the zombie motif by Snyder and the carnage and blood was a blast.

Re: Army of the Dead (5/21/2021, D: Zack Snyder) - Netflix

I also showed some support for the industry and local theater workers yesterday ... and YES, this movie is a BLAST! I recommend seeing it on the big screen.

I admit, I actually had a few tears rolling in the opening credits.

Aside from the opening credits, I would say the "Snyderisms" are very toned down. Even the opening credit sequence was more Zombieland than Snyder, but most will point to the slow-mo there and try to make a (bad) argument. My only real criticism was the end did feel a little rushed despite the time it took up -- the story did fall apart a little bit. The end could have used another round of revisions ... it isn't bad, some things just happen with too little build/payoff.

The world-building was great. I like some of the swings they took at trying to do something different. Special effects were theatrical quality (plenty of blood ... and boobs). The cast was a great team ... I spent the whole movie going "I know that actor" ... but most of them I did not. I even thought The Coyote was Becky from The Connors (she wasn't). That wasn't Josh Duhamel as the chief of security. And Anthony-Michael Hall is not that young anymore.

Tig Notaro was a highlight of the film, Star Wars reference and all.

Why do I love Bautista in glasses? Every time I see it ...

How to Un-Cast an Actor
When an Army of the Dead star got called out, Zack Snyder called on Tig Notaro to save a role.

I generally enjoyed the film but Snyder likes his scenes to play "long" and you have to be tolerant of that. Bautista was quite good, -better than I expected. Since this is essentially a "Men (and Women) On a Mission" film and to a lesser extent a Heist flick, it could have used more colorfully-written characters or character actors who bring some extra ooomph with their presence.

For those who don't like to click and read ... Chris D’Elia was originally cast. He got in trouble for lots of lewd hookup activity on Instagram (including underage girl(s?)).

That's not even the point of the article. It is about the process they went through to put Notaro into the movie.

I assume that is the same article posted earlier in the thread and that is a big part of why I wanted to call attention to Notaro's performance. I have no clue who Chris Delia is or what he would have brought to the role, but I doubt it could have competed with what Notaro did and the choices she made with the role. I want more movies with that character!
