Tenet (2020, D: Christopher Nolan) Washington, Pattinson, Debicki
Christopher Nolan's next movie is slowly coming into focus.
Warner Bros. announced Friday that Nolan's next film will open in Imax on July 17, 2020.
The project is described as an event film, but nothing else is known about Nolan’s latest venture. The writer-director has a propensity for secrecy, writing his scripts away from any prying eyes. Furthermore, he is of such a stature that he can attract the actors he wants, package his project with thespians and then present it to a studio with what amounts to a simple yes or no question: Are you in or are you out?
The filmmaker is coming off of the World War II film Dunkirk, which won three Academy Awards and earned the filmmaker his first best director Oscar nomination. The Warner Bros. film grossed $526.9 globally.
The release date makes sense for Nolan, who has a predisposition for July releases. Of the filmmaker’s last five movies, four have opened in that mid-July sweet spot, including 2008's The Dark Knight, 2010's Inception, 2012's The Dark Knight Rises and 2017's Dunkirk. Interstellar was the exception, opening in November of 2014. There are a few other films also slated to open on July 17, 2020: Paramount's SpongeBob Movie and Fox's Bob's Burgers. Disney's Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, opens up a week later on July 24, 2020.
Nolan is currently more than 20 years into his directing career. After releasing his $6,000 feature, Following, in 1998, he broke out with 2000's Memento, which earned him and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, screenplay Oscar nominations. He went on to carve out a reputation for crafting cerebral blockbusters that have also included 2002's Insomnia and 2006's The Prestige.

That was a blind item that was posted a year ago. People were guessing it was about Nolan, but there wasn’t really any evidence of it. I swore we had a discussion here about it, but couldn’t find a thread. It sounded like bullshit but who knows. I think it was more than just the porn industry.
Edit: this was it. If it ends up being true I’ll merge.

I like Nolan so I’m interested in seeing what this will be. Dunkirk didn’t exactly wow me though.

So it's not Traci Lords... but I can't think of another that was a crossover from that era with all that history.

Would a film about the porn industry be considered “an event film”?
That blind item also made it sound like the script was already out and making its rounds when the OP makes it sound like Nolan has kept his script completely under wraps.

It's Nolan. Apparently the big wigs are still baffled by Interstellar and Dunkirk doing as well as they did, so he could probably shoot an actual $100m porno right now and still be fully funded with no argument.

I only came here to see what snarky Nolan-bashing comment sven had posted here but discovered that yesterday's Nolan bashing sven post was put in the Movie that Changed Movies Forever thread instead. Color me disappointed.

If I was going to make a snarky comment I would write that this film will probably just be a bunch of scenes of exposition strewn together with Hans Zimmer's music blaring so loud that you can't understand half of it... but I won't.

John David Washington to Star in Christopher Nolan’s Next Film (EXCLUSIVE)
By JUSTIN KROLL Justin Kroll
Christopher Nolan has tapped “BlacKkKlansman’s” John David Washington to star in his next “event film,” sources tell Variety.
Nolan recently finished the script for the movie and Warner Bros. quickly dated it for July 17, 2020 — a slot the studio often reserves for the director, most recently with “Dunkirk.”
The gig has become one of the more highly coveted in town, even though most of the industry has been kept in the dark about who has been meeting for the role and what the movie is even about.
The plot details under lock and key. One insider described the pic as a massive, innovative, action blockbuster, which will again be shown in Imax.
Nolan is also producing along with his partner Emma Thomas. Production is set to commence later this year.
After breaking out in Dwayne Johnson’s hit HBO series “Ballers,” Washington is coming off a monster year on the film side, starting with his starring gig in “BlacKkKlansman,” which won best adapted screenplay at the Oscars. The role earned him rave reviews, as well as Golden Globe and SAG nominations for best actor. Washington also had strong performances in “The Old Man & the Gun” and “Monsters and Men.”
He is repped by WME.

The pieces of Christopher Nolan‘s next cinematic puzzle are starting to fall into place, as Robert Pattinson is poised to star opposite John David Washington in the next film from the director of Inception, Collider has exclusively learned.
With plot details being kept under wraps, little is known about the actual film, though Variety described it as “a massive, innovative action blockbuster” that will once again be shown in IMAX — no surprise given Nolan’s preference for the large-screen format. Nolan will produce alongside his wife and longtime collaborator, Emma Thomas, and Warner Bros. will release the movie on July 17, 2020, with production expected to start this summer.
My understanding is that Pattinson and Washington (BlacKkKlansman) will play the two leads, and there will also be an age-appropriate female lead, as well as an older male co-star. I don’t know if there’s a love triangle in play here, or whether Pattinson and Washington will be friends or enemies, so just like all of you, I can’t wait to find out what Nolan’s next movie is actually about. There’s speculation that the film could be a sequel of sorts to Inception, and while I don’t expect that to be the case — outside of his Batman trilogy, Nolan has eschewed franchise fare, including sequels — I suppose anything is possible. You never know with Nolan, who’s coming off of 2017’s Dunkirk, which brought him his first Oscar nomination as a director and grossed $526 million worldwide, so the world (and Hollywood especially) is his oyster.
To that end, every actor in town is eager to work with Nolan, and I can’t imagine a scenario in which Pattinson would turn him down here, plus his schedule can accommodate a long shoot. Pattinson, for his part, has been working towards this moment ever since 2012, when he said goodbye to the star-making role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. Those films made Pattinson an international celebrity and afforded him the opportunity to pick and choose his follow-up projects, which he did very, very carefully.

Elizabeth Debicki Joins Christopher Nolan’s Next Film (EXCLUSIVE)
By JUSTIN KROLL
Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson are on board to co-star with John David Washington in Christopher Nolan’s next movie, Variety has learned.
Nolan recently finished the script for the currently untitled film and Warner Bros. quickly dated it for July 17, 2020 — a slot the studio often reserves for the director, most recently with “Dunkirk.” Not only was that film a success at the box office, bringing in $526 million worldwide, but it also earned Nolan an Oscar nomination for director, his first in the category.
The project has become one of the more highly coveted ones in Hollywood, even though most of the industry has been kept in the dark about everything from casting to plot details. One insider described the pic as a massive action blockbuster, which will again be shown in Imax.
Nolan is also producing along with his partner Emma Thomas. Production is set to commence later this year.
Debicki is coming off a huge year, having starred in Netflix’s “Cloverfield Paradox” and “Widows” while also voicing a character in “Peter Rabbit.” She recently wrapped production on the upcoming HBO horror series “Lovecraft Country.” She is repped by CAA and United Agents.
Pattinson has a busy 2019 ahead of him with Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse,” “The King” at Netflix, and “Waiting for the Barbarians” all expected to bow this year. He can next be seen in Claire Denis’ “High Life.”
He is repped by WME, the Curtis Brown Group, and 3 Arts Entertainment. The Pattinson news was first reported by Collider.

Christopher Nolan Taps 'Hereditary' Editor Jennifer Lame for His New Movie (Exclusive)
Nolan's regular editor is off working on Sam Mendes' war epic '1917.'
For the first time in a decade and a half, Christopher Nolan will have a new picture editor.
Jennifer Lame, who last worked on horror indie hit Hereditary, has been tapped to serve as editor on Nolan’s latest project, an untitled action adventure that is to star John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson.
Nolan’s main man has been Lee Smith, the Australian editor who first collaborated with Nolan on 2005’s Batman Begins. That started a relationship that lasted through The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and, most recently, Dunkirk. Smith won an Oscar for the 2018 movie, as well as the American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Award, and gathered a nomination for Dark Knight.
Smith, however, is unavailable because he just stepped into 1917, the World War I epic being made by Sam Mendes, with whom he previously worked on the 2015 James Bond movie, Spectre.
Entering the Nolan arena is a major movie for the WME-repped Lame, who has spent most of her career in the world of small-budgeted dramas and has been the go-to person for Noah Baumbach. She has worked with the filmmaker since 2012’s Frances Ha as well as on While We’re Young, Mistress America, The Meyerowitz Stories and his latest project, an untitled feature recently wrapped that stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. Other credits include Paper Towns and Manchester by the Sea, with the latter earning her BAFTA, ACE and Spirit Awards for her editing work.
Little is known about the new Nolan project but sources have described it as a globe-trotting adventure that has shades of the mind-bending nature of Inception but does involve the time continuum.

I hadn't planned on commenting in this thread because I don't plan on ever seeing this film. I haven't seen Dunkirk and have given up on Nolan.
If I was going to make a snarky comment I would write that this film will probably just be a bunch of scenes of exposition strewn together with Hans Zimmer's music blaring so loud that you can't understand half of it... but I won't.

Stvn1974 is the only reason I'd even click on a Nolan thread. Are you Nolan fanboys so fragile that you can't take a little mocking now and then? What's happening to this place? It's getting just as bad as Home Theater Forum.
