This thread used to be very informative but I went and derailed it. Sorry for taking it on such a circuitous and irrelevant root.

It's all good, there's really nothing to report. We know this shit isn't going to come out in July, no matter what WB or Nolan says.

Agreed. It’s all a roos by Nolan and WB.

Tenet needs to make at least $800M worldwide just to break even.

Under the current shitty conditions of America and the world that’s going to be almost impossible to achieve.

Article tries to give possibilities of what WB should do. None are really good. The one that seems like the best option, but bad for the U.S. is release it overseas first in markets that are safe.

They think PVOD is unlikely unless you charge $30 or more.

But that would likely lead to piracy.

This will cause studios to think twice about pouring money into these kinds of projects. They’ll lose money on this movie. Their strategy in releasing it will determine just how much they’ll lose.

I dont get the numbers in that. The movie had a $200m budget and I guess $200m reserved for advertising? That doesn't seem necessary coming out of this and frankly not that much has been spent yet.

Loans with interest and the theaters also take a 30 percent cut of the renvenue.

Movie studios don’t have billions and trillions laying around. Movies are paid for by loans that have to be paid back.

I get the loan part, but I don't know those numbers seem off. Also I thought theaters got a much higher percentage than that.

They never have. Just buy their popcorn and they'll do okay.

I bought movie theater popcorn once. I think it paid for AMC’s electricity for the summer movie season.

Yeah, I got my numbers backwards, I was thinking studio share, not theater share.

Maybe shelve the movie until theaters reopen.

I'm not sure if it's Nolan or the studio but they're hell bent on this coming only to theaters this summer. No way it gets shelved if that 800m to break even number is accurate. And no streaming service would pay anything close to that to buy the rights.

Re: Tenet (2020, D: Christopher Nolan) Washington, Pattinson, Debicki

This movie is way way too expensive to just dump on a streaming service. And let's be real. No one is going to pay $30, 40, 50 to see it for a short term streaming rental. Maybe only a super small eclectic film fan population. The casual movie goer highly unlikely.

This needs worldwide and U.S. box office revenue.

I don’t mean shelve it forever, just for a long time until it can have a proper giant premiere.

I understand. My comment was referring to having to pay back debt from the film this year. If they waited till 2021, they would have to pay out of pocket or somehow defer to next year.

I remember in 1999 the woman in front of me bought $40 worth of concessions (for a few people) and I was astonished at the price. Even now that’s a good amount.

That might work out to be an average. I believe (depending on the release), studios can take as much as 90% of the box office of opening weekend, but the percentage lowers every subsequent week.

Re: Tenet (2020, D: Christopher Nolan) Washington, Pattinson, Debicki

WB's next move needs to be much more definitive imo, no more of this two week business. Either take WW84's Oct spot (which imo is the likely earliest date back for theaters), or I say go with 6/30/21. Yes, the loan interest will add up, but if they make 200million more next yr they might as well go with that.

Yeah if they move Tenet one more time, it has to be definitive. Either book it in the Fall or postpone it to next summer.

The interest buildup on the loans is going to be fucking brutal if they postpone it to next summer and will add more to the production costs.

If the food was all for her, ouch. But I top out at about $20 for popcorn, soda, and candy or pretzel.
