I don’t know if you’re referring to independently financed movies or toy merchandising but if you’re referring to the latter, I agree. And it’s almost ALWAYS for the worse when it comes to the quality of the film itself.

Modern tent pole movies are flashy pictures with weak stories because they are advertisements for product. I think that Warner is less interested in making a good Batman movie than in leveraging the property so they can sell more Batman bumper stickers. It's My Little Pony / He-Man / GI Joe with a $300 million budget.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! was rated X, and they sued to get it changed. The court upheld the decision, but it led to debate on cinema sexuality and censorship. Which eventually led to NC-17 ratings.

Which got us Showgirls and the rest is history.

I hope this isn't too far off track, but I was thinking about Blade Runner (the original) this weekend and it made me wonder, what are the films that it inspired in the mid 80's? I'm sure there was some, but I can't think what they would have been. All the Star Wars/Star Trek/Jaws ripoffs are obvious, but not BR.

Blade Runner inspired the entire Cyberpunk genre

It also inspired anime such as Ghost in the Shell

Die Hard inspired a lot of action movies that were described as "Die Hard On A [fill-in-the-blank]" (For example, Speed was described as "Die Hard on a bus" when it came out)

Most of the obvious are mentioned so I'll go a little smaller scale. X-Men. Up until then all superhero flicks were colorful, characters had costumes that matched their comic counterparts, etc. By going with black leather/spandex suits it unwittingly inspired almost everything that followed to go darker, drab and colorless.

Who knows...the tension of "not seeing the shark" was 100 percent due to it not working. Had everything gone smoothly, who knows what kind of film we would have got. So many movies from the 70s and 80s became classics because the filmmakers were under pressure and low on money - most studio productions these days may feel the time crunch, but the money is less of an issue and CGI "solves" most problems. I think Spielberg himself may have said that he's not sure Jaws would have become JAWS if not for all the problems (although I'm sure it would have added a few years to his life!).

That's not 100 percent correct. The Empire Strikes Back was actually the movie that made Lucas (and Lucasfilm) self-sufficient. He sunk all his profits from Star Wars PLUS some outstanding bank loans to fund the sequel on his own (and in order to maintain control of the franchise). Had Empire failed, Lucas would have probably had to declare bankruptcy.

Yeah, but that's the only one that comes immediately to mind. What would be some others?

"You people go out in public like this?"

I'm okay with this one, the garish colors don't always work well on the big screen.

Yeah, Under Siege was Die hard on a ship. It also popularized movies of an average guy taking out the bad guys all alone like Air Force One or Con Air.

Before Die hard, the action heroes were buff muscled up guys like Stallone.

AKIRA was definitely inspired by BLADE RUNNER. Also, several OAV (made-for-video) anime series such as Bubblegum Crisis (and its various sequels and spin-offs), which had a lead character named Priss, and Dominion Tank Police, from GITS's creator.

Yeah, a lot of good anime. But I still can't think of a lot of live action films that followed it.

Re: Movies that changed movies following it?

That’s not a set, it’s an actual building in LA. But they certainly recreated the same lighting.

Re: Movies that changed movies following it?

In light of Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and the slew of comic book movies coming out this year like every year for nearly 20 years, I think I will leave this right here:
