What's incredibly stupid is that WB knew the allegations about Depp before they cast him, and those allegations have now been called significantly in doubt, so what the hell is so much worse about Depp today than it was when they cast him?
Yep. I won't be paying money to see the next one for sure. Totally double standard to fire Depp yet keep Heard.

I'll watch the next one for sure. Thankfully, this franchise isn't sitting on Depp's name or him being in it. Sure, dumb WB move, but they've had a pretty bad record and dumb decisions already with a lot of properties.

Mads Mikkelsen to replace?
https://variety.com/2020/film/news/m...-3-1234827545/

(should have just kept Farrell, changing from him to JD just to give the series a high profile actor was just ... weird)

At this point in their respective careers I think he's a far more interesting actor than Depp, but it remains to be seen if they can correct the more fundamental story problems, and I don't the JKR controversy is going away any time soon.

Never caught the first sequel. I guess I have lots of time to catch up. I'll probably need to watch the first movie, too.

I can predict that one of Dumbledore's secrets will not be that he was born female!

Yeah, they really do. And screenwriting isn't one of Rowling's strengths. I would hope they bring in someone to do a rewrite to tighten up the story and punch up the dialog.

And I also wonder how much Rowling has damaged her legacy and brand in recent years with all of the TERF stuff she's been spitting out on social media. A lot of hardcore Potter fans are really pissed at her, but I don't know if it will enough to the point where she Dixie Chicked herself.

Re: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022, D: Yates)

Just a little nitpick here, but shouldn't the title be Fantastic Beasts AND the Secrets of Dumbledore?

ETA: I guess the previous one was titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and not Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald. I just assumed they were keeping the titling convention of __________ and ____________ from both the Harry Potter series and the first film.

Or I'm experiencing some hardcore Mandela Effect shit right now...

I posted earlier they brought back Steve Kloves to write it with her.

Yates is the problem. He's been driving this entire franchise for 15 years now. This thing needs new creative blood and vision. The fucker's turned into John Glen.

I’ll just quote myself as a reply.

Re: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022, D: Yates)

I think Yates is a decent enough director, serviceable and workmanlike, but I think that Warners and/or Rowling is looking for bland thematic consistency.

It's like how Prisoner of Azkaban is probably the best of the Wizarding World films, but it also stands out like a sore thumb between Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire.

I would have loved to have seen Cuarón, or a similar stylist, shepherding the Fantastic Beasts films.

I either missed that completely, or forgot about it. I'm so used to complaining about the scripts to these movies, it might slip my mind.

Watch closely, in six months I'll probably say they need to bring in a co-writer again.

Re: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022, D: Yates)

Yates made my favorite of the original films (Order of the Phoenix), which was odd considering it was my least favorite of the books. He found the beating heart of the story and did it beautifully. Everything after that, though, was a bit of a stumble.

I thought the first Fantastic Beasts movie was fine, but I hated the second movie. I hope the third movie is better. I agree that they need to replace Yates and Rowling and go in a different creative direction

Re: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022, D: Yates)

I thought the first one was an interesting idea, if it were just about Newt playing magical Pokémon gotta-catch-em-all. The thing with the abused kids was just weird. We've never gotten around to the second one, and I'm not interested in giving JKR any more money to fund her Terf BS.

I can't bring myself to get rid of my books and Blurays, but I'm not buying anything else from Harry Potter.
