Movie titles based on unrelated songs

Today as I was driving to lunch, The Cure's Boys Don't Cry came on, and I was reminded of the Kimberly Peirce film. Started thinking of other instances of it, like

My Own Private Idaho
Watching the Detectives

I'm sure there's more. For this little game, the song has to have had come first, and the movie and song have to be completely unrelated. So something like The Misfits' Night of the Living Dead, or Ode to Billy Joe don't count.

Re: Movie titles based on unrelated songs

^ American Pie definitely counts.
Frankenstein and Some Like it Hot, the movies came first (assuming you're referring to the Edgar Winter and Power Station songs)
Babe is kinda generic. Sort of like Roxanne. I was debating listing Starman for the same reason.

And since I listed a Van Halen song, I should have also mentioned
Beautiful Girls
(although that does kinda fall into the "generic" trap listed above)

Sting re-recorded it for the movie. I have the EP soundtrack.

I'll go with I Melt With You, the Rob Lowe movie from earlier this decade.

Doh! I missed the rule about the song coming first, sorry about that.

I'll add Strange Brew

Actually, the Psychedelic Furs recorded that song several years before the movie, and the song and film are totally different.

I just remembered one that's a little more obscure: They All Laughed

And I haven't heard of any movie called Fat Bottomed Girls.

Right. But the OP says they should be totally unrelated. How is this the case if it the song is in the movie? Maybe I’m misunderstanding your post.

Simple. Had Don MacLean's American Pie somehow been on the soundtrack of the 1999 sex comedy, it would still count. But had the film been a story about the day the music died, featuring someone driving to a levee, etc, then it wouldn't.

Also, most music bio-pics use a song from the artist as the title (La Bamba, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc). They don't count.

I was debating whether or not to include Valley Girl, but I figured the movie subject is similar enough to the song (even though the Zappa song isn't on the soundtrack), it doesn't count. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is probably closer to what I had in mind, as the Lauper song isn't at all related to a girl wanting to win a dance contest.

The OP uses Boys Don’t Cry as an example. That song is in the movie.

Re: Movie titles based on unrelated songs

Wasn't Stairway to Heaven a film first, starring David Niven?

Not to keep adding caveats, but I don't mean coincidental titles, where a movie and song just happen to have the same title. Like I doubt either version of Creep had Radiohead in mind. But Gus Van Sant was clearly thinking of The B52s when titling his film My Own Private Idaho

The first 8 were pretty good, but they started running out of ideas with Fat Bottomed Girls vol. 9
