On the Rocks (2020, W/D: Sofia Coppola) S: Bill Murray, Rashida Jones
Apple has officially entered the feature film world.
Apple and A24 have teamed up on their first film under their recently formed partnership with “On the Rocks,” Sofia Coppola’s next pic, reteaming her with her “Lost in Translation” star Bill Murray along with Rashida Jones.
Coppola will direct from a script she wrote. Coppola and Youree Henley will also produce.
The film follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York.
Production is set to start next month in New York and marks A24 and Coppola’s second go-around, having previously partnered on “The Bling Ring.” The acquisition marks a major get for Apple’s first feature production, given the heat a Coppola-Murray package would spark with other studios.
“Lost in Translation” not only landed Murray an Oscar nomination, but established Coppola as a force in directing circles and would launch the young filmmaker’s career, landing her an Oscar for best screenplay.
Murray has been busy, having recently finished production on Jim Jarmusch’s next movie “The Dead Don’t Die” as well as Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.” Jones most recently directed the doc “Quincy” about her father, iconic music producer Quincy Jones.
She is repped by UTA and Coppola is repped by ICM Partners.

Lost in Translation is a masterpiece. Looking forward to their next collaboration.

Bill Murray is my favorite actor of all-time. Lost In Translation is my favorite film of all-time (tied with 2 or 3 others). To say I'm excited about this film is a monumental understatement.

Scott Movie Mantz reviewed it and gave it a positive review.
This comes out October 23rd on Apple TV+ But, it will have some limited theatrical screenings and drive-ins.

Yep, its only in theaters as an Oscar qualifying run, its intended for TV+.

We were looking at doing a Drive-in this weekend and this is playing. Not sure I'd want to see this at a drive in but does look good.

There is no such thing as an Oscar qualifying run in 2020. If it was intended as a theatrical release, it will qualify regardless of whether it appeared in a theater or not.

I so want to see this. Shades of LiT, but looks great! Her directed movies are really well done, if not always considered darlings like Marie Antoinette or Bling Ring. But, I love underrated Somewhere with a great turn from Stephen Dorff. I’ll never forget him for this and I fucking loved Felon, with Val Kilmer too. 98, I think. So good!!

Is it just me or did they completely change the marketing of this movie? I used to see commercials that actually mentioned the plot and now it seems like they're just advertising it as "Bill Murray is in a movie!"

This was fine. Not bad by any means, just nothing overly spectacular. Still an enjoyable 90 mins.
Good music, locations, and I like the way Sofia shot the city.
I haven’t seen any commercials for this, but I would assume that if you are trying to market your lower ranked streaming service’s new movie to Average Joe and Jane putting the biggest name forward is the way to go. Rashida Jones isn’t a selling point and neither is Sofia to them.

Just watched with the wife. Fine is a perfect description of the movie. Nothing great, nothing terrible. No noteworthy performances. The plot is pretty basic.
