Mission Impossible: 7&8 Back to Back

Christopher McQuarrie Closes Deal to Direct Back-to-Back ‘Mission: Impossible’ Films (EXCLUSIVE)
By JUSTIN KROLL Film Reporter @krolljvar

After delivering the biggest box office hit in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, Paramount Pictures is ready to continue being in business with director Christopher McQuarrie in a big way.

Sources tell Variety that McQuarrie has signed back on to return to write and direct the next two films in the popular franchise. Sources also add that both films would be shot back-to-back — not unlike the final two “Avengers” sequels — in order to take advantage of the popularity of the series, with the first bowing summer 2021 and the second coming out in summer 2022. The release comes in 2021 to avoid conflict with Paramount and Cruise’s next big venture, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

McQuarrie confirmed his return to the series on Twitter.

McQuarrie had said in recent interviews he was hoping to do something different and had been meeting on a handful of projects including Paramount’s “Without Remorse” starring Michael B. Jordan as John Clark. With the latest “Mission: Impossible” film grossing over $790 million worldwide, the best haul in the franchise to date, the studio knew they couldn’t let a good thing die and quickly moved to bring back McQuarrie to write and direct the next two installments.

McQuarrie will now look to start writing the script while Cruise continues to shoot “Top Gun: Maverick.” While no start date is set yet, sources indicate the studio would intend to start shooting sometime in 2019.

After years of switching up the director to give a new feel to each installment, Cruise and Paramount have now settled on McQuarrie as the primary director for Ethan Hunt’s globetrotting adventures. The move bears similarities to when Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling tapped David Yates to stay on and finish out the “Harry Potter” series following his first stint on “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

The most recent “Mission: Impossible” installment, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” was also the best-reviewed entry with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%.

McQuarrie is repped by CAA and Ken Kamins.

Re: Mission Impossible: 7&8 Back to Back

The Mission: Impossible franchise is without a doubt my favorite series at the moment. They’re consistently strong movies.

I say continue making them as long as the cast is willing and/or until Tom Cruise finally dies filming a stunt.

Given how much he pushes the envelope, sadly will likely be the latter...

Wow, so Cruise will probably have back to back to back summers with big tent pole movies. Has that ever happened for one actor?

Definitely a good idea to shoot them back to back. He turns 57 this summer and will be pushing 60 when this comes out.

Bring it on! Hope Tom doesn't die during filming this one. No shame in using a stuntman now and then.

I would have preferred some new vision but MI6 was pretty much spot-on perfect. Back-to-back sequels never work out though. They're almost always subpar (Matrix, Pirates, Back To The Future, etc.). LOTR is the only exception.

I thought one of the strengths of the franchise was going with different directors, ala Bond? So McQuarrie has done two and is doing two more? Granted, the most recent two are the best of the bunch.

Regardless, I'm in.

I wasn't as overwhelmed by Infinity War as some, but I think it's a fair bet that IW and End Game will work out too. Also, if the Salkinds hadn't fired Dick Donner Superman and Superman II would qualify. Even now with the bastard Donner/Lester hybrid it probably does.

As for MI, I've really liked what McQuarrie has done with 5 and 6 so I am definitely on board for what is almost certainly a final two (at least with Cruise). This kind of lead time (and back to back films) also allows them to lock in any returning cast members that they might want to have. I assume Pegg and Rhames are a given.

it almost feels like two separate series’. 1-3 seemed to try to change it up with 3 different directors and 3 different styles and 4-6 feel like 3 very similar films that have a single plot thread (granted they’ve pulled some plot details from M: I III for the last 3 movies).

For all we know, McQuarrie likely has been working on these scripts since last year and it was only made public by the studio today.

Don't forget about Rebecca Ferguson. I think she's pretty much a given to return as well.

Depends on what direction they want to go. Honestly I think she could be a candidate to get killed off.

With two films coming up, it looks Renner made the right call in not letting Brandt get killed in the last one.

He's certainly been working on the deal, if not the stories themselves - but it makes sense that he has a rough outline of what he wants to do.

Smart move filming them back to back, as Cruise probably realizes that even he is not immortal. My only hope is that movie #7 can standalone and doesn't come off as a long trailer for movie #8.

#3 almost feels like the FIRST film in the series - other than Ving Rhames character, most of the stuff we know now originated in MI 3.

I won’t argue with that. You have to admit, after the dismal part 2 they righted that ship like a beast!

now if they could finally get away from the silly face swap masks for the next two movies I’ll be happy. I get that it’s a hallmark of the franchise but o think they could stop havin the masks in the movies and no one would care. Thankfully, they’ve used that plot device sparingly since part 3.

The masks are okay, what I hope we won't see aren't anymore IMF agents (or CIA for that matter) going rogue.
