Produced and Directed by Peter Jackson:
The acclaimed documentary is an extraordinary look at the soldiers and events of the Great War, using film footage captured at the time, now presented as the world has never seen. By utilizing state-of-the-art restoration, colorization and 3D technologies, and pulling from 600 hours of BBC archival interviews, Jackson puts forth an intensely gripping, immersive and authentic experience through the eyes and voices of the British soldiers who lived it.

Why only those two days? Sounds like a lot of work was done towards this documentary. I can only see it on one of those days. And I didn't realize this was in 3D, first time I heard about it.

I wanted to see this but I can't make either of those days. Why the heck did they release it this way? Will it maybe get a larger release after the new year?

Stupid.

Apparently, it aired already in the UK on the BBC. WB is partnering with Fathom Events for US distribution on these two dates.

I saw a behind-the-scenes video of this on YouTube.
The conversion process of the old B&W film was fascinating, and the results are incredible.
A must-see for anyone interested in the subject matter.

I saw a preview for this a couple of weeks ago and it gave me Uncanny Valley vibes. Are these actual video restorations? That vibe gave me the impression it was old photos that had been CGI-ed into video.

Although the trailer above doesn’t give me that vibe like the other one I saw.

I saw the trailer for this yesterday when I went to see The Mule and I'm amazed at the WWI footage tey managed to get, colorize and have audio.

I'd like to see this, but can't go today and it's only playing again on the 27th. A-List isn't paying for it and AMC's are only showing it in 3D. If I can go see it on the 27th, I may have to try to find a non-3D showing at a Regal.

I saw it tonight in 3D. Extremely impressive conversion/restoration. The first 15-20 minutes are in the original black and white footage, then it converts to the restored/colorized version. It is honestly a "whoa" moment. The 3D is not overdone, nothing flying at you...just adds a sense of depth. The level of detail and colorization really add to the emotional impact of the stories that are told. There's a detachment when watching fuzzy b&w footage, but when you can really see the soldiers' faces, from the color of their eyes to the shades of their teeth (my god, most people had horribly discolored teeth back then), it's very moving. There is alot of footage of the carnage of war. Dozens of corpses in various stages of decay, riddled with bullet holes, heads half blown off, etc. The thing that had me cringing the most though was the footage of soldiers with trench foot (gangrene). So nasty. The movie is narrated by New Zealand troops who were sent to France. They tell stories from signing up for the war, training, to being sent to Europe and life in the trenches, to coming home and experiencing what alot of Vietnam vets would experience later: hostility from people they fought for.

If you can catch a showing on the 27th, I highly recommend it.

Actually it’s narrated by mainly British soldiers that the BBC has interviewed in the 60’s and 70’s. There is a great “making of” after the main feature.

Highly recommended.

I didn't pay close enough attention to see this is such a limited engagement. My A-List says all shows for today and the 27th are sold out or "almost full," which turns out to be only wheelchair spaces left. It's showing on some of their smallest screens all over the metro, not a theatr over 100 seats or so. Looks like I'm missing this one, too bad.

Noted. Interviewed that long after the war? Wow.

It wasn't highly publicized but apparently Ted Turner produced this.

I also saw the trailer during The Mule. First I had heard about this project and it blew me away. I got teary eyed a little just from those few scenes. It just brings such a hyper realism with the restored footage. Seeing the soldiers clowning around in their downtime made them feel alive and real to me like I was there in person.

Alright so I decided to splurge and purchase a ticket for this at AMC on the 27th.

I had $5 in rewards, so the ticket came out to $10 in 3D.

Normally I wouldn't splurge on these "Fathom events" things as most don't interest me, but this seems like a really compelling film and I'm a sucker for War history. And I think seeing this on the big screen will add to the experience as opposed to waiting for the home release.

That's exactly how I felt when I saw the trailer to this film. This is incredible. I would snatch this up on blu-ray in a heartbeat.

Peter Jackson is a fucking GOD.

A God? Because he had a great idea, that was actually done by other people?
A bit much, eh?

Saw this today (the last day it was showing)

Amazing documentary. If you're into War history, this will be your cup of tea. I really liked how it integrated the old footage and then the newly restored footage shortly afterwards. Also, it's an untraditional documentary as all the narration is cultivated by Jackson and his crew from hundreds of hours of interviews from WWI survivors that was filmed in the 1960s and 1970s.

The footage is just amazing. Huge kudos to Jackson and his team on what they accomplished with it. There is some really gritty and rough footage of life on the battle front. One thing I found interesting was how the soldiers all took shits together on the battle field. There is literally a bench for them to all take shits at the same time. The disease infested fields and the smell must have been absolutely rancid.

Before the movie started there was a 10-12 minute intro from Jackson and after the movie, there was a 30 minute documentary on how they made the film, which was amazing. Pretty much everyone in my theatre stayed for the Making of documentary. Amazing what they did in post for the audio and re-creation of sound from the fields.

I give this an A. I hope WB considers expanding distribution in 2019. This film deserves to be seen by more people.

Some good news. There will be more opportunities to see this in 2019 if you couldn't make the 2 special showings:

Warners will open They Shall Not Grow Old in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, DC, on Jan. 11, with expansions to the top 25 markets on Feb. 1, Super Bowl weekend. The movie didn’t qualify for Oscar’s Best Documentary category this year as it missed the Oct. 1 filing deadline. This is a pure admirable passion play for Warner Bros. on behalf of their Lord of the Rings and Hobbit helmer Jackson.

Not so. All the theaters in Vancouver have on average one daily show in 3D with 3-4 showings in 2D.
