Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019, P: del Toro, D: Øvredal)

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is an upcoming American horror film directed by André Øvredal, from a script co-written by Guillermo del Toro, Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton, John August, Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman. It is based on the children's book series of same name by Alvin Schwartz.

Never thought I'd see a film adaption of a horror folklore collection, but these were my favorite books during childhood. I assume they're going to try and recreate some of those iconic Stephen Gammell illustrations -- otherwise I don't see the point.

I think Del Toro is a great visionary but lackluster director. I’m excited to see what he can do with a project he’s strongly involved with but not directing.

Wow, I didn’t know this was being made. Love the books (still have them after all these years).

I've enjoyed Andre Øvredal's work (The Autopsy of Jane Doe/Trollhunter), so I'm definitely interested in this.

I immediately recognized the “girl running into the bathroom and looking in the mirror” super bowl commercial snippet, since that is my favorite story from these books. But I did notice something...book spoiler below

Spoiler:
The spider leg emerging from her face seemed longer than it should be. In the book, lots of baby spiders emerge from her face.

I either didn't know or forgot they were making this movie, very excited to see they're staying faithful to the original art. My wife apparently somehow missed these books when we were kids, and actually got me a collected edition for Christmas that had the Gammell art --that was her first time seeing them and she absolutely freaked out. Can't wait!

Even though it's a short glimpse, I like how the 'Pale Lady' looks from the story, 'The Dream'.

As a director he's hit or miss with me. I loved Blade II, and Pan's Labyrinth, but thought Hellboy and Pacific Rim were average.

I was worried this would be toned down and star Jack Black.
Looks good though!

More than once as a kid I spent time snooping around the grounds of the creepy old mansion the features prominently in this movie. It's in a small town called Petrolia not far from the small-ish city where I grew up. The town was one of Canada's original 'oil boom' towns back in the 1800's. That didn't really pan out long term, but remnants of the boom years are abundant, including many vintage oil rigs, still working, across the area, and lots of stately Victorian business buildings and homes, the biggest and creepiest of which was always Fairbanks House. For many years it was owned and furnished, but I don't think anyone actually occupied it (the descendants lived elsewhere in town but maintained it), and I rarely recall it being opened to the public despite its historic significance. We'd snoop around the grounds as kids and dare each other to peak in the windows or try the doors. You could make out shapes of old furniture and whatnot, but active imaginations of the 1970's had us convincing each other there might be some old Fairbanks crone still living in there waiting to swoop down the big staircase and eat us or some such silliness.

Looks like this movie might be my opportunity to finally see inside the place! Assuming it wasn't just used for exteriors, of course, which is probably likely.

The house is also seen on the poster shown in earlier in this thread.

From the dark imaginations of Academy Award®-winner Guillermo del Toro and acclaimed director André Øvredal, based on the iconic book series, comes Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark — in theaters this summer.

It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind...but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.

The dialog and acting seem off, but visually it looks good.

Dug that Trailer!

As an artist, Stephen Gammell is one of my biggest influences, so I'm very excited to see how this turns out.

Seeing this Friday afternoon. It's not playing in Dolby Cinema or IMAX, just digital in my neck of the woods.
