I was excited to see this, but after having watched it, I'm pretty disappointed.
Whereas the Michael Bay films were stupid, this one feels kinda dumb.

The opening war on Cybertron scene was a nice gift for old school fans, but it comes across as just an exercise in CGI. A slightly better version of the Transformers: War for Cybertron video game trailer.

They attempted to briefly copy a scene from The Iron Giant. It KIND of reminded me of E.T. but just reminded me that E.T. was so much better.

The animating and character designs were top notch though.

Wow this movie was great. It was everything a Transformers movie should have been from the very beginning. I really hope this does well enough to have this be a jumping off point for a reboot of the series.

Still hasn't crossed $100m US but is doing solid work overseas (not amazing but good)

Considering it was made for $100mil less than the last one and will be in the same neighborhood of the final domestic BO, I don't see why this would be considered a failure. Global will probably be $200mil less, so that isn't great. But if they keep making these cheaper than those bloated turds Bay made they can rebuild the franchise. A sequel or next chapter with all the other Autobots to this probably would do better based on WOM and seeing that the franchise is in course correction mode.

I hope they are paying special attention to the positive reviews that it's received. I'm still amazed that it's sitting at a 93% fresh rating. I really hope they take that into consideration. Because at this point what other franchises does Paramount have?

Looks like it's made about $290M Worldwide. China is now factored in after it's 1st weekend there.

It probably needs to make about $400M to make a small profit/break even.

This was so much easier to follow and the character of Charlie was loveable and sympathetic. T2 was terrible. T3 was slightly better but only slightly then it jumped the shark from there.

Supposedly, the original version of the film doesn't have the Cybertron opening. Bumblebee is already on Earth.
There's a scene where they show a frozen G1 Megatron at Sector 7 and the people there say that the two Decepticon's must not know about him.
The scene where Bumblebee sticks his finger in the socket was supposed to have all the appliances come to life as Transformers, and Memo and Charlie had to kill them by cutting their power cords.

Wow, that sounds like shit out of the Michael Bay versions. Glad that didn't make it.

Wow good article. All these changes were positive IMHO and I'm glad they all made changes to step AWAY from Bayformers.

I thought this interview really showed what made Bumblebee such a great Transformers movie.Travis Knight is the Transformers savior

And this video just makes me love John Cena.

Hah yeah Cena was the perfect age for all the 80s stuff, Angela Bassett was almost 30 when most of it launched and the other kids are kids.

I could be mistaken but it looked like Bumblebee only stick his "finger" into the ground on the electrical outlet.

I'll have to look for that next time I watch the movie.

So it looks like Paramount is viewing this as a success which is great news. CEO of Viacom congratulates Paramount on Bumblebee for being solidly profitable.

Easily the best of the Transformers movies so far. Glad to see that they’re starting fresh and rebooting this franchise rather than trying to continue on with the shit show that the Bay films turned into.

The story wasn’t really anything incredibly special and does feel a bit like a Spielberg film, particularly E.T. obviously, but it was still enjoyable. Liked the 80s period setting quite a bit and the soundtrack was good.

The human characters in this are all likable and I felt like we got a decent balance between the Transformers parts and human parts. Hailee Steinfeld was a good lead overall. John Cons was pretty good too. The rest of the cast was fine but none of them really stood out a ton besides the guy who played Memo a bit.

The Transformers looked good too and it was cool seeing them with more of their G1 designs. Bumblebee really was able to emote a lot of personality despite not talking. Glad that Peter Cullen is still Optimus as he just is that voice.

Overall very enjoyable film and I’ll grab it on Blu-ray. Hopefully the sequel is as good as this as I felt like the first Bay film was decent at the time too, but the films went downhill rapidly afterwards (though I feel like this was a better film either way).

Watched it again and yeah. He does stick it in the ground. Good catch.

Loved it! The 5 Bay films no longer exist to me. This is (mostly) what I wanted as a fan

The first Bay film had shit designs on the robots, Optimus saying “my bad” and Bumblebee pissing on John Turturro. Agreed that this was a much better film directed by someone who isn’t up his own ass.

Calling this movie the "best" of the Transformers movies is the literal definition of "damning with faint praise".

Good movie, solid movie, but nothing special or inspiring. As a kids movie and a Transformers cartoon extrapolated to live-action, it was fine. Decent. Nothing more. Much of the character building and slapstick had been done before in other (aforementioned and better) movies.

By the way, in case you forgot the movie was set in 1987, the soundtrack reminded you roughly every 87 seconds.

Enjoyed this much more than the other Bay movies. Was sort of like watching an Adam Sandler movie with all the 80s tunes.
Enjoyed not having all the 'transforming' sounds like the other movies.

Somehow that eventually took me out of the story. It was back-to-back and didn't even seem to fit the scene at times.
