The only 2018 Hollywood release I saw and liked last year was CRAZY RICH ASIANS. Not a single nomination.

Surprised Viola Davis and Toni Collette didn't get noms.

Re: 2019 Oscar Pre-award show discussion, nominees, etc.

I've seen 6 of the 8 Best Picture nominees. It pays having a Movie theater subscription service.

If I had to pick, I would choose Green Book. I know it's gotten some flack for being "Inaccurate" by the family of Don Shirley, but who cares. It was a great film with good performances, not a documentary.

I really enjoyed A Star is Born, but personally wouldn't consider it Best Picture material. I liked BlacKKKlansman, but I think Green Book resonated with me more.

I'm shocked that Black Panther got a Best Picture nomination.

I'm also really annoyed that First Reformed didn't get more but I knew that was coming. I'm glad Schrader atleast got a nom.

I'm hoping BlacKkKlansman upsets with Best Picture.
The Academy has a history of ignoring popular docs that don’t cover “important” topics. Crumb, Hoop Dreams and Roger & Me were all snubbed.

I've seen all 8. I think the biggest cinematic achievement is Roma. I enjoyed Green Book, but it was the two lead performances that made that movie for me. The story felt a little white-washed (pun deliberate). It's an imperfect movie, but the film that yielded the biggest visceral reaction from me was BlacKkKlansman.

A Star is born is sooo overhyped. Good movie at best but not great.

Black Panther was only added to get the demographics to watch the show. Plain and simple. No way should it be up there.

Sort of cool that Black Panther got a nomination but it’ll never win. Seems like a gimmick to try and draw people that wouldn’t watch in.

Both were considered long shots. I certainly would have preferred Collette over the Roma gal. Thought she was pretty mediocre actually. Haven't seen Widows yet.

Then you haven't been paying attention. It was a BP nominee at the Globes, SAG and PGA Awards. And it was on everybody's list as a likely nominee.
It was also probably the reason they killed the Popular Movie Oscar. It was pretty apparent Panther would be a Best Picture nominee.

Driving Miss Daisy won BP even though the director didn't get nominated. Then again, that movie was about some black guy driving a white person around, so totally different type of movie.

I started its own thread (and it got very little response), but I loved Minding The Gap. It streams on Hulu and is a really cool look at skateboarding culture over a number of years. Surprised but happy to see it in the Best Documentary category. Well worth watching it on Hulu if you have some time.
Pleased about Free Solo as well. Loved that movie.

If they really wanted a diverse superhero film to be BP, they chose the wrong one. Could Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse have been nominated in both categories? There was no Best Animated Film category when Beauty and the Beast was nominated for BP.

What bothers me about Black Panther getting nominated is it's one of the weaker Marvel movies.
Oh well....

I wouldn’t say one of the weaker but it wasn’t one of my favorites either. I feel like it’s viewed more as a culturally significant film and important in that respect. I’m not taking anything away from it for that but I wasn’t incredibly wowed by it where I think it’s Best Picture material.

While I didn't expect it to get any major noms, I'm kind of disappointed to see that MI: Fallout didn't get any technical noms, esp in terms of editing. Deserved it for the extended chase through Paris, if nothing else.

Also surprised by the omission of "Won't You Be My Neighbor" for Best Documentary.

I'd really like to hear from the academy on why Won't you Be My Neighbor didn't get a nod. It received nothing but universal praise. I know we'll never know but it such a big miss.
