The bottom line is he doesn’t beat his children. And he wouldn’t beat his children. It was part of a comedy act. He’s describing an exaggerated reaction. That’s the comic part.
Man slips on banana peel.
Ha!
Man steps around banana peel, bends to pick it up, and 40,000 lbs of bananas are dropped on him from a crane.
Hysterical!!!

Not really, the Oscars have all those "short" categories. Also, Alex Wolff? Him?

Nice to see Toni Collette getting some awards. I hope this bodes well for an Oscar nod even though the Golden Globes snubbed her. Her performance was the best thing about Hereditary.

Would be weird to have "The Three Amigos" win 5 of 6 Best Director Oscars, but it's looking to be like that will be what happens.

I believe Roma starts streaming on Netflix this Friday.
Has Eastwood's "The Mule" been held back from early screenings? There are no reviews of it yet. I wonder (assuming it's good) if it could sneak into some of these latter award shows and wind up with a bunch of Oscar nods (in the same way "American Sniper" did). Come one, this is probably Clint's last on-screen appearance - you know the Academy would love to give him Best Actor if they had a good excuse (meaning if his performance is solid...it wouldn't even have to be "great").

While Rami Malek is deserving of a Best Actor nom,BR would just about be the lowest rated MC/RT movie to get a Best Picture nomination.

And how does The Favourite get SAG nominations for 3 of its actresses but none for the ensemble, while Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians get ensemble nominations but none for their actors individually?
Edit: had my performances mixed up (although maybe they did too).

So Fisher, who is 15 years old, gave the best breakthrough performance but not the best performance by an actress 23 and under. Not sure how that works, unless they just decided to split it so each could get one.

Re: 2019 Oscar Pre-award show discussion, nominees, etc.
So it looks like Best Actress is between Colman, Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy which is... eclectic to say the least.
The academy normally loves when a performance carries a popular film but rarely rewards them. So actually I guess it's more Colman and McCarthy.

Re: 2019 Oscar Pre-award show discussion, nominees, etc.
Avengers, assemble!
In the wake of its popular Oscar and Kevin Hart debacles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could use a superhero save — or two.
It now appears that the show, airing Feb. 24, won't have a traditional host, but instead will rely on a rotating cast of stars to introduce various segments. And to up the star quotient even further, the show's producers are currently lining up appearances by as many big-name cast members from Marvel's sprawling Avengers franchise as possible.
An Avengers all-star Oscar reunion wouldn't be unprecedented. Following the success of 2012's Avengers, the 2013 telecast featured Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) together on stage. But since then the Avengers' ranks, as well as those of its rivals and foes, have only grown, and this time around the Academy is looking to pull together an even bigger assemblage.
The Academy declined to comment, but word is that specific details are still being hammered out about how the actors who play the popular characters will be incorporated into the 91st Oscars ceremony, which is being produced by Donna Gigliotti and co-produced and directed by Glenn Weiss.According to sources, several of them were asked not to present at the recent Golden Globes in order to ensure their appearance at the Oscars would have even bigger impact.
If the show's producers can pull off a such a Marvel-ous stunt, it could benefit all involved: the Academy (which would love to serve up a star-studded show), ABC (which could potentially reap ratings benefits if it has an opportunity to promote the Marvel teaming ahead of time) and Disney (which owns not only ABC, but also Marvel). Certainly, it would be a nice promo for Avengers: Endgame, which opens April 26.
Of course, Thanos did reduce half the Marvel Universe to dust at the end of last year's worldwide hit Avengers: Infinity War, but that's a problem for another day.

I have a feeling because 3 of the BP nominees are giant box office hits(A Star Is Born,Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody) and a 4th box office hit might sneak a BP nom(Crazy Rich Asians) the ratings will be huge this year even with no host.

Well Green Book won the Producer's Guild Award last night, making it a Best Picture front-runner after a series of mild controversies seemed to leave it for dead. Now it and Roma seem to have all the heat and appear to be the co-favorites.
A Star is Born is looking dead in the water except for music and maybe Best Actress.
Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Film so it seems to have the Best Animated Feature Oscar pretty well locked-up
Won't You Be My Neighbor won in the Documentary category

I'm not sure that Roma has a great shot at Best Picture. Its acting hasn't received any awards attention, so it's not likely to get much support from that wing. I think we'll see a split, with Roma winning for directing and something else for BP.

Re: 2019 Oscar Pre-award show discussion, nominees, etc.
I think it would be better for the Academy if something other than Roma won though. Nothing like giving the top prize to a Black & White, Spanish language movie with no stars in it that streams on Netflix to a largely indifferent viewership to really cement the notion that the Oscars are out-of-touch with regular moviegoers,
Regarding acting : There have been 11 movies to win BP without an acting nomination. Most recently Braveheart (1995) Lord of the Rings : Return of the King (2003), Slumdog Millionaire (2008). So while it's not common, it's not unheard-of. And Roma winning wouldn't be that different that when Slumdog won -- except for the Netflix angle (which I'm not sure will be a factor or not).
