Re: Disney's Cruella (2021, D: Gillespie) S: Emma Stone

Brilliant. Bad. A little bit mad. May 2021.

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Disney’s “Cruella” is directed by Craig Gillespie (“I Tonya”) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. It was produced by Andrew Gunn (“Freaky Friday”), Marc Platt (“Mary Poppins Returns”) and Kristin Burr (“Christopher Robin”), with Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff and Glenn Close serving as executive producers. Two-time Oscar®- winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “A Room with a View”) creates the dazzling and imaginative costumes, which take on a life of their own.

I guess they changed their minds because it looks like this will play in theatres. Theatre chains are posting the trailer on their social media saying in theatres May 28.

Who is that trailer for? I’m sure it’ll be a light Disney villain movie but that trailer plays like a dark psychological thriller.

At least Maleficent had the fairy tale element to fall back on. This looks like Joker meets the Devil Wears Prada.

And what? She’s magic now?

Magic? If you mean the thing with the dress, she lit one on fire to reveal her other one, like those "quick change" tricks but cheesier.

I'm not the target for this movie.

Worst comes to worst they throw it on Premium VOD a couple weeks later.

Not really sure what to make of that trailer. I wasn’t that interested in the first place, and the trailer really didn’t do much to sell me. Only reason I would maybe see it is Emma Stone but meh.

Yeah. I suppose a “quick change” trick could be what they were going for. The dress burned a lot slower than you would expect for quick flash. I guess I buy it as being a trick, despite the probably 3rd degree burns she would have sustained.

You know how kids' pajamas used to have flame retardant material on them and now they don't? They discovered that the flame retardant material just made the material burn longer if a spark landed on the kid, and that was causing even worse burns.
If something burns off super quick, you're less likely to get burnt. Since this seems to be set in the past, I can see her making the overlayer out of something very flammable but making the underlayer with something like asbestos.

I'm still on the fence here, I love the original movie, but I've never bothered with any of the spinoffs or remakes (are any worth bothering with?)

I'll definitely be waiting for reviews on this one.

I like a lot of the actors in this and it looks like it could be a fun movie. I like that Disney is playing with these characters and trying something new.

Just don't think people will be able to look past the fact that she slaughters cute puppies and maybe seals for her wardrobe. She's like the Hitler of animated Disney villians.

Ah, but when we learn that she was bullied as a kid and her stepmother was mean and sent vicious dogs after her (Dalmatians, no less!) we’ll realize she wasn’t really the villain at all.

It turns out society was the TRUE villain!

Can hardly to take the little ones to this Disney movie . Anyone with a name like "Devil" is simply misunderstood.

Fun fact: director John Carpenter’s band was named the Coupe De Villes.

That has nothing to do with anything but it always pops into my head when I hear of Cruella De Vil.

Re: Disney's Cruella (2021, D: Gillespie) S: Emma Stone

I went ahead and reserved a ticket on A-List for next Friday. I'm seeing A Quiet Place II next Thursday night.

I know this movie probably doesn't interest the majority here, but it looks fun and Emma Stone is a draw for me.
