Stars 80s to Present - aside from Tom Cruise, who else is there ?

After just rewatching Mission Impossible Rogue Nation in preparation to watch Fallout, really dawned on me that no star from the 80s is still going as strong as Tom Cruise

Say what you like about Cruise, hes had a few misses, his longevity, when he could have well been "flavour of the month is impressive

Over the last 4 decades, i cannot think of another movie star who has been the star of at least 5 decent performing theatrical released movies per decade as Cruise

The secret to Cruise's continued box office is that he's a big time producer like Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Bay and Spielberg. His production company produces box office hits that he casts himself in.

I'm hard pressed to think of a recent hit movie she was in aside from Wonder, in which she was essentially a supporting character.

Tom Hanks is a good answer. Streep? Depends on whether you're talking about steady quality work or box office hits.

Kurt Russell is having a resurgence of sorts over the last few years.

I guess it depends on how you define "decent performing theatrical releases"

80's
Kramer vs Kramer (came out very end of '79) $106
French Leutentent's Woman $26M
Sophie's Choice $30M
Out of Africa $87M
Heartburn $25M

90's
Postcards From the Edge $39M
Death Becomes Her $58
The River Wild $46M
Bridges of Madison County $71M
One True Thing $23M

00's
The Hours $41M
The Manchurian Candidate $65M (really???)
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events $118M
The Devil Wears Prada $124M
The Ant Bully $28M
Mamma Mia $144M
Doubt $33M
Julie & Julia $94M
It's Complicated $112M

10's
The Iron Lady $30M
Hope Springs $63M
August : Osage County $37M
The Giver $45
Into The Woods $128M
The Post $80M
Mamma Mia : Here We Go Again $120M

That's a decent haul right there. And take her out of a lot of those movies and they don't make nearly as much without her. She's a star AND a box-office draw.

Arnold does not have it anymore ever since he became governor of CA in 2003 he has not done anything substantial in movies for a long time.

Nobody cares about Julia Roberts. What was her last hit?

The secret to Cruise's continued box office is that he's a big time producer like Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Bay and Spielberg. His production company produces box office hits that he casts himself in.

Or just continue to make MI movies or he would not have a successful career without those movies.

De Niro has done drama, action, and comedy and that versatility pays off.

I mentioned it earlier in this thread. But she wasn't really the star of that movie.

Re: Stars 80s to Present - aside from Tom Cruise, who else is there ?

Denzel was a working actor for much of the 80s and won his first Oscar in 1989 so for him I guess it would depend on whether you think he became a star in the 80s.

Bruce Willis has gotten lazy (in terms of seeking quality) in the last ten years, but he's still a name, and he will have a big movie coming out in January.

Michael Keaton had some time in the wilderness so to speak in the early 00s, but he's back as a name actor these days.

I think Keanu Reeves has had enough in each decade to qualify.

Stallone has had a hell of a career.

Rocky was 1976. Creed in 2015 made $109M in the US.

Samuel Jackson was in Coming to America and Do the Right Thing in the 80s and then did Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, the Matrix movies, Star Wars films, the Incredibles and continues strong with the MCU movies, Kingsman and Glass.

Matrix movies?

Mel Gibson attempted to kill his own career, but it's still going.

Jeff Bridges may not make as much money as Tom Cruise, but he’s had a hell of a consistent career that has spanned over half a century.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but from the 80's until present day I think Harrison Ford has probably out grossed Tom Cruise. Perhaps even in the last 10 years too.

Mrs Danger suggested Jeff Goldblum. I argued that he's more of a character actor than a star, but she thinks he's a marquee name. I'm not convinced.

Goldblum's first movie was Death Wish in the 70s, He did make the The Fly. I'll say John Travolta.
