The Green Knight (2021, D: Lowery) S: Patel, Edgerton, Vikander, Keoghan
EXCLUSIVE: After teaming on the 2017 drama, A Ghost Story, which starred Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, director David Lowery and A24 are back in business with Green Knight, a fantasy epic retelling of the medieval tale, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight.
Lowery, who most recently helmed The Old Man & the Gun comedy, starring Robert Redford, will direct the film as well as produce along with Toby Halbrooks James M. Johnston. A24 is financing with Ley Line and BRON Studios.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the most famous books in early English literature. As the story goes, chivalrous and loyal Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, accepts the challenge of beheading the Green Knight and must wait a year and a day to receive a blow in return. In the end it was a test of his loyalty to the King.
There have been two previous adaptations, both of which were written and directed by Stephen Weeks. First, the 1973 film Gawain and the Green Knight, starring Murray Head and Nigel Green, followed by 1984’s Sword of the Valiant, with Miles O’Keeffe and Sean Connery.
Lowery’s other directorial credits include Pete’s Dragon and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. He’s repped by WME.

I'll see it. It should have English majors lining up around the block (those of us who can afford to go see a movie anyway).

It's one of my favorite stories. But it's a fragile thing, and it would be ruined if it were filled with big action sequences and extra monsters. It's the story of a young man agreeing to be killed, and then going out to meet his appointment despite all the excuses he gets offered to duck out of it.
The trailer sure makes it look like they got it right.

yea...I don't know about this one. It has its positives...the acting was outstanding, especially by Patel. And I dug the cinematography....but the story was kind of a mess. At times very intriguing, but a lot of "what the fuck" moments too, as in nonsensical.
I also didn't get why Gawain was this brave, courageous knight who didn't hesitate for a second when Arthur asked someone to face the Green Knight...then the rest of the movie he's a little pussy who seemingly doesn't know how to fight. I was really disappointed that there was no actual sword fight between Gawain and the Green Knight.

That there was no sword fight between Gawain and the Green Knight makes me want to see the movie more.
It's supposed to be a different kind of combat. Did the movie include the scenes where the beautiful wife of the Green Knight tries to seduce Gawain while her husband is out hunting? It places him in the position of either offending the lady of the house or betraying the trust of his host (who plans to kill him in three days).

I thought this was great. Lowery did a superb job of mixing mesmerizing visuals with hypnotic music to create something quite intoxicating. The pacing might be too turgid for some, but I never found the movie boring and always sensed that scenes were all being carefully played out in order to set up a finale that would be quite satisfying. It also respects the audience's intelligence and doesn't try to explain everything or hold your hand and walk you through all that's going on. All in all, probably one of the best films I've seen in a theater since the pandemic began.

Yeah, I thought it was awesome and quite profound. I saw it at an AMC theater and it played in small theater that was about 90% sold out. When the film ended -- a good portion of the crowd let out an audible groan. I guess the trailer makes it look like an action packed flick which it isn't. It made 3 million last night and will do well for the weekend. I do see it dropping hard by next week considering how divided audiences are.
I hope A24 make a cool 4K collector's set for this film like they did with Midsommar. Green Knight is one of the best films of the year.

You make it sound like English majors all graduate into lives of low paying jobs that may or may not predominantly be in the service industry. That's a bit of generalizing.
Anyhoo...saw this today and REALLY liked it. The production design, acting, and direction was all superb. That being said, like all A24 productions, this seems to have been sorely mis-marketed to the public. I got lucky in that my showing was only myself and some other person who sat in the back of the theater. Pretty much ideal for this kind of film, as nobody will heckle because the story bores them to tears. This really does a good job of following the Arthurian legend, up to a certain point where

I too would love a 4K of this one. It looked good on the big screen but it was VERY dark and hard to see what was going on in a lot of scenes.
