There's a good chance I'll go watch this movie in theaters. I liked the live action Grinch movie as a kid when it first came out, but as I've gotten older my opinion changed on the movie. I hope this a better movie.

this appears to be destined to be part of my Blues Brothers 2000 list; movies I will never see. The live action grinch is on that list already, as is the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Depp.

I just don't get them doing this to classics. (Yeah its a cash grab, I know.)

This movie will have to get INCREDIBLE reviews for me to pay to see it. The Jim Carrey Grinch was one of the worst movie-going experiences of my life (it was such a joyless, charmless slog to sit through), and I have little hope that this new version will begin to touch the simple appeal of the original classic cartoon, which also benefits from being brief. I don't think the Grinch story lends itself to a full-length feature at all. But they keep trying, because money.

Every one of the trailers and ads I see for this is obnoxious and unfunny. No interest in this movie for me at all.

My daughter thinks the Jim Carrey one is one of the greatest movies ever, but in her defense, I thought Yor, the Hunter from the Future was the greatest ever when I was six years old.

The problem is, the original animated version is, like, 25 minutes long. It’s just the right length for this story.

A full length feature is just filling a short, succinct, story into a bloated mess to achieve the “feature length” run time.

The trailers I’ve seen for this already look like they’ve added a bunch of unnecessary crap (young Grinch, some cow/ox thing in addition to his dog, etc.).

Also, did anyone notice there’s two versions in the trailers of the Grinch’s “this is the loudest snow I’ve ever heard in my life” scene. One has the cow and one doesn’t.

I noticed it. Couldn't figure out why. Maybe the cow wasn't animated yet. Or maybe got added later.

One clever thing I have noticed about this movie's marketing on YouTube: depending on what kind of video you're about to watch, the ad that plays beforehand has the Grinch making a dour comment about it. Things like, "Oh good, like your life needs more cat videos." Not sure I've ever seen video-specific ads like that before (or maybe I've just never paid attention).

I'm a big Grinch fan, but this doesn't interest me one bit. I know I will be dragged to see it, but i'm not looking forward to it.

I disliked the live action Jim Carry version at first, but it's grown on me over the years. Maybe the same thing will happen with this film.

I am looking forward to it. Even though the direction and writing talent is different, there is enough of the "Despicable Me" influence in the project that I think it will be fun.

I agree that the previous movie was a joyless, charmless, slog. At the very least this version has avoided that as it does have charm, the people of Whoville are no longer creepy and it reminds me more of the book and tv version. However, it doesn't surpass it so I don't really know what the point of this really was. I guess if the Carrey version is never aired again and this replaces it during future holiday seasons that is a win. Maybe kids reluctant to watch the 60's version may be more interested in seeing the superior version now. Even at 90 minutes or so the movie seemed a little long, maybe it wasn't meant for the big screen.

Way better than I anticipated. I’m writing up a full review tomorrow. I do think they should have waited until after Thanksgiving to release it, though.

THE GRINCH (PG) - He’s not quite the mean one we remember, in an update that that’s full of sweetness, heart, and laughs

It’s true. It is about 3 weeks too early for this new telling of the classic Dr. Seuss tale “The Grinch”, terrifically and grumpily voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Doctor Strange). But it’s here now, complete with Seussian narration by Pharrell Williams, the Grinch’s intricately detailed plan to steal Christmas from Whoville, and a fun B-plot that focuses on CindyLou Who and her intentions to “kidnap” Santa Claus for personal reasons. I will not go into this, as I found the entirety of her story extremely delightful.

Yes, just like the live-action version starring Jim Carrey a couple of decades ago, this telling (as directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier) is padded with extra material, including some fun characters, but what it does not have is the mean-spiritedness nature of that 2000 film. The new Grinch is not out for revenge, he’s just managed to avoid Christmas for 53 years because of painful memories from his time in an orphanage, and the loneliness of being a self-imposed hermit. Nobody’s been mean to him, and at least one neighboring Whovian (Kenan Thompson) considers himself the Grinch’s friend.

Also, the obvious love Grinch shows his faithful canine Max, which Max enthusiastically reciprocates, is refreshing and sweet, and Grinch extends that love to Fred, the overweight reindeer that has his own heartwarming secret, which plays an important role at the climactic scene on Mount Crumpit.

Whoville and its citizens are well designed and fun to look at, and in general the music soundtrack, primarily by Danny Elfman and which includes actual Christmas carols, is appropriately festive. If I have any real criticism of Illumination’s The Grinch, I am not a fan at all of the new hip-hop version of “You’re a Mean One” by Elfman and Tyler the Creator, and whatever the music was that played over the final credits.

But, overall, I was enchanted and entertained by “The Grinch”. I just think it’s too early in the season for such a terrific holiday gift. I’m giving “The Grinch” 4 out of 5 lightsabers. It’s a great treat for the entire family.

NOTES TO PARENTS: The Grinch is rated PG for mild rude humor, I personally think is for one scene when one of CindyLou’s friends is briefly shown nude holding a large cookie in from of his privates. The worst word I remember is “heck” being used once or twice.

MID- and AFTER-CREDIT SCENES: Extra fun during the credits shows all the characters doing silly things, and how Grinch is interacting with his new-found friends.

I watched this last night with a friend. It was cute, but overall disposable and nothing particularly new or interesting to add to the Grinch's story. The little side story of Cindy Lou, her friends, and mom seemed like just a time filler to hit 90 minutes. I think the best thing is really the enhanced role for Max, and the chubby reindeer character that are super adorable and lovable. Which is interesting that even someone as lonely and isolated as the Grinch still has a pet; dogs are great! :p

Agree completely. It was ok. Nothing more, nothing less. I walked out of the theater wondering why it was even made (money, obviously).

It was ok, the kids liked it, but I did feel like the chubby reindeer and the dog interactions softened the Grinch a bit too much. But it made for a better kids movie, I guess.

I took the family to see it on Friday and we were all disappointed with the film. It seemed like a watered down version of the Grinch.
