Free Solo (2018)

Re: Free Solo (2018)
Since watching this I have not been able to get the Luc Besson film The Big Blue out of my mind. That film, which I have always loved, has also always troubled me. (FYI for those that haven’t seen it, it’s a narrative fiction film about competitive deep sea free diving.) I’ve always been drawn to the film, but also extremely frustrated as it’s main character is emotionally distant and his actions become more and more selfish and indefensibly reckless as the film progresses. It’s hard to love a film where the main character is so unlikable.

The way he shrugs off dying as just another thing that can happen is more than a little disturbing. He’s certainly no role model.

Yes, the director’s cut, while probably too long for most audiences, includes a lot of wonderful stuff.
When I finally saw the short version, I was amazed at what they left out. However the theatrical cut does include one short shot that was left out of director’s cut.

Just watched it on D+. The feat was amazing but insane, and I like how they covered that it takes a certain mentality to want to do it. I also liked how it showed how thoroughly he practiced and prepared, and how the camera crew were figuring out how to film him. The end was riveting.
Wikipedia says he and Shanni announced their engagement last Christmas. I didn’t expect that relationship to last that long (they met in 2015).
