Halloween is masterful in capturing the actual feel of light and shadow in a suburban neighborhood at night, and capturing coherent visuals in that environment.
Some times it's not the filmmakers but the party making the transfer. I recall watching "Thinner" years ago on DVD, and there are two scenes where characters are supposed to be in shadow, -a surprise reveal and a shoot-out; on the DVD they are clearly visible throughout and it makes what happens in the scenes illogical. The director complained that Artisan boosted the contrast for home video and he didn't have any say in the matter. Sometimes it's your equipment, -Game of Thrones was a problem on my old set but just fine on my 4K (which may be why they sometimes boost the contrast).

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

1. Halloween
2. Halloween II
3. Halloween 2018
4. Halloween H20
5. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
6. Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers: The Producer's Cut
7. Halloween 3
8. Halloween 5
9. Halloween (Zombie)
10. Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers: Theatrical Cut
11. Halloween Resurrection

Never saw Halloween II (Zombie) even though I do own it in the big box set

Resurrection IMO was the worst. Just a shameful way to bring back Laurie Strode and then write her out again.

The Producer's Cut of 6 IMO made it a much more watchable movie. The original version is barely comprehendible.

Yeah, that is true. Michael’s look is one of the film’s biggest drawbacks.

Since the original mask is unique and iconic I always wondered why they couldn't reproduce it correctly in all of the sequels? Did it have something to do with licensing payments to William Shatner (whose face the original mask is made from) if they created anything that resembled the original mask too closely?

I don't think so. I always assumed the original was gone since they didn't plan on keeping the character after the 2nd. And they just made something people reacted negatively towards.

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

I usually break this series down into sections so I usually watch them all out of order.
Halloween
Halloween II
Halloween H20
New Halloween
I think it’s a bummer the new one erases the previous two listed. That’s a pet peeve of mine as well as keeping the exact same title. Moving forward though I’ll watch in that order on Saturday.
Halloween 4
Halloween 5
Halloween 6
These are usually a chore for me to get though. Unlike the F13 films, these aren’t fun or good. There’s no one to root for except for Loomis. If he wasn’t in these films they’d be unwatchable.
Halloween 8
RZ Halloween
RZ Halloween 2
I skip these. I’d rather forget they even exist. I MIGHT watch Resurrection this year since a friend of mine has never seen it. I can’t envision a scenario where I’d ever watch the Rob Zombie abominations again.
I also love III.

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

I didn't hate the first Zombie film as a movie but I did dislike quite a bit how he tried to give reasoning behind Michael's madness (trash family, bullying...etc). The idea of evil being in an every-day person is much scarier than someone who was obviously messed up as a kid and turned into a killer.

His 2nd movie is a whole different conversation.....

H2 is the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen. That’s saying something considering the amount of low budget terrible horror movies I’ve seen in my life.

I thought whoever played Michael Myers ruined the entire movie.

Is his name in the closing credits(that's how bad he was)?

Everything else was above average comparing it to 4,5 and 6.

^I think GoldenJCJ was referring to Zombie's Part 2. At least, I hope he was.

I don’t know. For years I read how The Producer’s Cut was supposed to be better, and I don’t think I really agree. To me the theatrical version is better. Both versions are definitely flawed though. Weirdly though I kind of like the movie.

I was. I actually quite enjoyed the original’s part II.

I’ve defended Zombie’s Halloween to some extent but his part 2 is excruciating!

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

Bump after the release of Halloween Ends. Overall I think the David Gordon Green films turned out very mixed. 2018 is probably the best one but still not my favorite of the franchise. I’d have to think about my rankings a bit.

I decided to watch Rob Zombie’s Halloween today for whatever reason. It had been forever since I watched it. Overall there are some interesting elements to it but it’s definitely not a favorite for me either.

I like some of the backstory elements, particularly when Michael is locked up and Loomis is trying to work with him. Malcolm McDowell is a great actor but definitely not Donald Pleasance. I do like Tyler Mane’s hulking portrayal of Michael and the overall look especially the mask is one of the better in the series after the original.

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

I watched the new one on Saturday at the theater. I pretty much hated it. I can’t really even think of a positive thing to say about it.
It did manage the impossible though. It moved Resurrection up a spot.

1. Halloween (1978)

2. Halloween III
3. Halloween II (1981)

4. H20
5. Halloween (2018)
6. Halloween 6

7. Halloween 5
8. Halloween 4
9. Halloween Kills

10. Halloween Resurrection
11. Halloween Ends
12. Halloween (2007)
13. Halloween II (2009)

Re: Halloween Franchise Thoughts/Rankings

There are really only three timelines care for. 1) Halloween where Michael is shot and the disappears never to be seen again. 2) Halloween III as a standalone and 3) Rob Zombie's two Halloween films. The rest can die in a fire unlike Mikey who seems to always escape it.

It's a money grabber. It's the reason why they keep pumping out so many. The franchise has turned into the likes of a "One Life To Live" soap opera. People are into this shit. They buy into these stories for strange reasons but then again look how people are also mesmerized by Jeffrey Dahmer.
------------

I gave up after H20 when it came to shelling out money. Last one I saw was the Rob Zombie remake (borrowed it from a friend) and thought it was pretty good.

I rank them:

Halloween (1978)
Halloween II (1981)
H20
