No need to ruin the end of another completely unrelated movie -- one I was going to watch next week once it came out on BR. That was a crappy thing to do.

I enjoyed the heck out of it. I've never seen the previous versions, so the ending hit hard and had my wife bawling. Great performances by Cooper and Gaga and excellent songs. I do agree that once they fast forward through Ally's success that the movie loses a little charm; seeing Jack and Ally flirt with each other and get her to sing was wonderful, but her stardom felt like it needed more time to develop.

I never thought once about the movie needing a real life counterpart or point of reference.

Now I want to see that other movie. The ending sounds awesome.

^ in my opinion, it's one of the best movies of the year. You'll hate it.

As for A Star is Born, I thought this was damn good, too.

Rock stars get drunk and stoned all the time and it just adds to their legends, but we've never seen anything like Kanye's real-time downfall before. His SNL appearance last week was wilder than anything a screenwriter could have dreamed up.
Rihanna isn’t a rapper.

Nope. She's Hip Hop. That's what it says on the other side of that slash (/).

You'd think you would bother to read the entire week-old post before quoting me and pointing out how wrong I was.

I’d say she’s just straight up pop. What the hell is hip hop about Shine Bright Like a Diamond? I’d say she and GA Ga could pretty much exchange songs and no one would notice.

I only go by what gets played on the radio.

Yeah, I'd say Rihanna is pop and not hip-hop. Anyways, looking forward to this movie dropping on home video after seeing it 3 times at the movies.

Well, for what it's worth, Wikipedia lists Rihanna as a Hip Hop singer. And so does Google.

Maybe her stuff that doesn’t get played on radio is hip hop.
Or you can just call yourself whatever you want these days.

I think Rihanna does a decent job of mashing up with hip hop artists, but I still don't consider her one. I also think she would have been an even harder sell to play the role in a movie like this. Lady Gaga, when she is her normal self, can be extracted from her already known persona. I don't think you could separate Rihanna from that. She is who she is and it would be even more distracting and harder to buy.

Just saw it last night. Amazing movie. This is a perfect Oscar movie as it ticks off all the necessary boxes. The lead actors get to emote all over the spectrum, there's great music, there's a tragic love story at its core and the movie is about the dark side of fame and celebrity. I can see this winning a lot of hardware in a few months. Do not be surprised to see Lady Gaga getting two Oscars that night, for Best Original Song and Best Actress.

100% agree. Saw this the other night and not once did I think or care to think who he was supposed to be modeled after. Enjoyed this quite a bit for it not being my type of music (guitar playing aside). The songs were easy to enjoy and fit the movie. I thought they were 100% foreshadowing the end when she
Spoiler:
said she would not get on the motorcycle if he was drinking. Thought for sure he would take it out and crash and die.
. So what did happen shocked me a bit.

I didn't notice this, but there is a shot of
Spoiler:
a billboard of nooses that frames Jackson's head when he is looking for a place to drink. The lyrics for the song "Shallow" also have some ominous wording:

I'm off the deep end
Watch as I dive in
I'll never meet the ground

That did stick out to me too. It was pretty poignant (and kind of “out of nowhere”) so you expect some payoff. Then again, that’s life. Random and often unresolved.

The film sort of lost me once Ally went Full Popstar. I honestly didn't give two shits what happened after that. Everything prior to that was fucking brilliant!

Also... I was more invested in the Sam Elliot/Bradley Cooper relationship . I could've sat there for 3-4 hours of that, the Alias cast and the drag queens.
