Prisoner Of Second Avenue was one of my favorite movies while I was still in single digits, and was followed a few years later by the Goodbye Girl. To this day, I still love both.
His voice was identifiable and indelible and after a while, I think, that became a liability as it sounded more and more like typical sitcom beat writing.

When the stars aligned though, when the material and the actors reading it were perfectly in sync, his work was magical to me.

I re-watched THE ODD COUPLE (1968) on TCM earlier this month, a film I hadn't seen in decades. It was the first Neil Simon film I saw and the difference in watching it now is that I'm on the other side of the fence, age-wise and divorce-wise, than I was the last time I saw it, so I could relate to the depiction of male pain more intently now. And it's a pretty honest depiction of it.

I saw "The Dinner Party" in 2001 on Broadway, starring John Ritter, Henry Winkler, Len Cariou, Veanne Cox, Penny Fuller, and Jan Maxwell.

It was a blast!

I've always like his plays.
