Stephen King's In The Tall Grass (2019, D: Natali) S: Wilson, De Oliveira -- Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: The Vincenzo Natali-directed thriller In The Tall Grass is getting underway in Toronto for Netfix, and the film stars Patrick Wilson, Laysla De Oliveira and Harrison Gilbertson. Pic is based on a short story by Stephen King and son Joe Hill that was published in Esquire Magazine. Netflix acquired the rights during Cannes, when James Marsden was originally attached. Scheduling conflicts knocked him out of the lead role.

After hearing a young boy’s cry for help, a sister and brother venture into a vast field of tall grass in Kansas but soon discover there may be no way out… and that something evil lurks within the tall grass. Natali, best known for Cube, Splice and most recently Westworld, turned it into a script. It is the third Netflix collaboration with King, following Gerald’s Game and 1922.

Pic is produced by Steven Hoban, Jimmy Miller, and M. Riley.

Wilson will next be seen in Aquaman, De Oliveira’s credits include Needle In a Timestack, Code 8, and Harrison Gilbertson is coming off Picnic at Hanging Rock. Rounding out the cast is Avery Whitted (Sidney Hall), Rachel Wilson (Backstabbers for Beginners), Will Buie Jr. (Bunk’d).

Netflix will release the film worldwide in 2019.

Wilson is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content and Gretchen Bruggerman Rush/HJTH; De Oliveira is Gersh, and Wright Entertainment; Gilberton is APA, LBI Ent and Morris Yorn.

Man, Stephen King is getting all sorts of attention lately on the streaming sites, isn't he?

I saw the header here and clicked to see if it was Luke, Owen or Rebel Wilson. It was Patrick.

It's Patrick. In Aquaman. A Conjuring reunion!

Your Wilson is the best of the Wilsons. I have him in my movie room.

In The Tall Grass (2019, D: Vincenzo Natali, based on King/Hill novella) S: Patrick Wilson - Netflix

Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Adapted from the eponymous novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill, IN THE TALL GRASS follows siblings Cal and Becky who find themselves trapped within a vast field of tall grass when they venture in to answer the cries of a young boy.

I'm partway through the novella. It's interesting... not sure how they'll turn it into a full film.

Didn't realize Natali directed the Tremors TV movie last year

Nothing is a good flick that people should seek out, but Natali seems best known for Cube and Splice, along with directing a lot of TV episodes.

edit: Thanks mods for merging this with the other thread.

Vincenzo Natali also directed some excellent episodes of Hannibal.

"Some places have a mind of their own.

Based on the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill, when siblings Becky and Cal hear the cries of a young boy lost within a field of tall grass, they venture in to rescue him, only to become ensnared themselves by a sinister force that quickly disorients and separates them. Cut off from the world and unable to escape the field’s tightening grip, they soon discover that the only thing worse than getting lost is being found. Written and directed by Vincenzo Natali."

Okay, I don't know why but that actually scares me on some level. Must tap into some childhood fear of getting lost. Anyway, looks promising.

Don't know why mega-prolific King would need a co-author for a novella but whatever.

I would assume he wanted his work to stand on its own merit when he decided to become a writer, His born-name is Joseph King, Joe Hill is his pseudonym. He looks just like his dad though:

As I understand it he was published and had a few novels out before 'the cat came out of the bag' that he was Steve and Tabatha's son. He wanted his work to stand on its own merit hence the name change or pseudonym, he didn't look as much like Dad earlier before the beard IIRC. I've read a few of his books and enjoyed them. Now that the cat is out of the bag he has the added fun of adding some things from Dad to his books as Easter eggs like Nozzela Cola and IIRC Tokera Spirit or something close to that from the King Mythos...

Edit to add; I read the Novella last year and it was pretty compelling story wise and should make an interesting movie.

His full name is Joe Hillstrom King. He wanted to try to get published based on the merits of his writing, and not because of who his father is. Hence the pseudonym. I think it’s admirable that he did that.

Joe King (joking) doesn't have the best ring to it for a horror author anyway.

This is up on Netflix today.

For some reason, I thought this was a theatrical release so I am pleasantly surprised to see this available already. I’ll try to check it out sometime this weekend.

Re: Stephen King's In The Tall Grass (2019, D: Natali) S: Wilson, De Oliveira -- Netflix

I read the story and then watched the movie last night. I thought the movie was better. It runs out of material from the short story like 20 minutes in, and switches to mostly new material. I thought most of the new stuff was well done, but the ending could have been done better. It was kind of confusing in places at the end, too, and I wish it had been explained a little more.
Spoiler:
It seemed like some of the people trapped were killed multiple times, but it’s not clear if they were resurrected or if it was different versions from different time periods. The non-linear nature of time in the field was not in the short story at all, but probably would have improved it. Although the ending really should have made a paradox.

Quite good. Enjoyable Twilight Zone type premise. Answers to the mysteries were a bit unclear. Intense and heartbreaking watching that happen to everyone.
