Okay, maybe it isn't an Apple TV exclusive after all?

You may have seen reports of the “Midsommar” Director’s Cut being exclusive to Apple. This is based on a report from Bloody Disgusting, who, to their credit, found some confusing wording regarding the new cut of the film being “exclusive to Apple TV.” However, according to a representative at A24, that’s not the case.We can confirm that A24 will release the “Midsommar” Director’s Cut to folks digitally, via Apple, but the tech company doesn’t have an exclusive. Exact details are unknown at the time, but it appears that the Director’s Cut will be available on other platforms, as well.
https://theplaylist.net/midsommar-di...pple-20190905/

With this in mind, I'm having trouble figuring out what the text on the Apple TV store is trying to say. Did they mean that getting both cuts together is exclusive to them and they will be sold individually everywhere else?

If this is correct and it isn't an exclusive, that means Bloody Disgusting took a tip from a random dude on twitter and ran it without requesting comment from A24, and then all the other media outlets just ran the story without verifying with A24 either. Brilliant.

I preordered the movie. The way it's listed on there is that the director's cut is an extra, as part of the supplements.

Digital. There's no hardcopy of the director's cut. The only way to get it, as of now, is to get the digital HD via iTunes.

But not MA, right, so won’t transfer to other platforms like Vudu?

Not sure. But probably not - especially if they're touting this as an "exclusive" I guess Apple might have a leash on it with regards to it porting over to MA and VUDU.

I thought I'd be able to see it over the past week but my schedule hasn't allowed for that.

To make matters worse, a few of the (closer) theaters moved their only screenings of the Director's Cut from 8:30-8:55PM to 11:00-11:10PM

Might have to wait for the Digital Release.

Saw the DC this weekend at the new Drafthouse in DTLA and loved both the movie and the theater. Aster has a way with aesthetics and slowly building dread that is lost on so many fresh horror filmmakers. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Saw the theatrical cut tonight. I really enjoyed it, but felt 20-30 minutes could have been shaved off to make it a tighter film. I know I'm probably in the minority feeling that way. I might eventually watch the director's cut one day, but felt it was too long as is. The first 15 minutes were definitely the best. And those last 15 minutes were bat shit crazy. I love this director. I cannot wait to see what he does next.

I'm just glad this is a "real" director's cut (the theatrical includes cuts requested by A24 for run time, the DC is just the original version). Proper tempo can make a movie seem shorter occasionally.

All that said, A24 seems to be going all out with this movie despite it doing middling business at best. I like that. Probably worth noting that it's their 4th highest grossing movie ($27.4m domestic), with Moonlight edging it out by $430k. (#1 Ladybird with $48m, #2 is Hereditary with $44m)

I just watched this and it's a really big WTF of a movie. It's definitely one wacky game show. I liked it enough, but I still think Hereditary is better. I went in on the director's cut first but will watch the theatrical cut at some point later on.

Just like Hereditary, this is another creepy technically well made film with a good performance by the lead actress. Its problem is that (again just like Hereditary) it falls apart at around the half way point when the substance takes a back seat to the style. Also, this did not need to be almost two and a half hours long. Ari Aster is a good director, but I have doubts about him as a writer.

2.5/5

I don’t know if an extra 24 minutes added to an already bloated film will make it better.

I would disagree with this blanket thought. Bloat can be bloat because of what was cut that tie in to/explained something that was l If the 24 minutes adds depth or explanation to it

I would disagree with this blanket thought. Bloat can be bloat because of what was cut that ties in to/explains something that was left in. If the 24 minutes adds depth or explanation to it, then bloat is no longer bloat.

For this film specifically:

Spoiler:
The “special needs” herald or oracle was something that needed to be cut or fleshed out more. The same goes for the seemingly out-of-the-blue brutality that occurred to the tree-pissing guy.

Yes. Seems there may not be English subs for the non-English lines in either cut, though they may just have Italian subs. I'd wait for any kind of confirmation first.

Some people will like it and others will not. No need to get all defensive about an extended cut changing the opinions of those that thought the original was a mediocre movie that was well made. I also felt that it was a bit bloated and that some of the characters fell into the typical horror movie cliches. I did like the movie but not as much as Hereditary. I wonder what Aster would do with a tightly woven 95 minute horror movie? Seems like he is trying to make the second coming of The Exorcist.

No English subs might be due to regional rights for home video. If it is the director's reason, it is likely done to make you, the viewer, be as clueless as to what they are saying in Swedish and the people in the scene. Not knowing that someone could be plotting your demise right in front of you should be very uncomforting.

because it's an Italian Blu-ray release, so English is purely optional.
Wait for confirmation, or, y'know, keep asking questions.
