I wanted to see this but it already left my local theater so I guess it’ll be either a rental or blind buy when it hits Blu-ray for me.

Saw a matinee of this today. Agreed that it wasn't as good as the first. I liked it okay but it seemed slow to start out and the story is kind of all over the place and a bit hard to follow. It seemed like in the beginning half hour or so we were just following Denzel's character in his day to day life but not a lot happened other than some random confrontations. Denzel is badass and the kills are cool and I did like the showdown in the abandoned town. Overall worth a watch at least and I'll probably pick up the Blu-ray when it drops in price to rewatch.

Re: The Equalizer 2 (Fuqua, 2018) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Caught this last night. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one but I like Denzel so I figured I’d give this a shot.

Man, it is ALL over the place. Subplots that that don’t add much or that don’t go anywhere (what was the deal with that old guy trying to recover lost art? And even weirder, the reunion with his sister (?) at the end. The fuck was that?!). That shit came out of left field!

I enjoyed the ending in the abandonded town during the storm but it just came out of nowhere. One minute we’re in peaceful neighborhood on a sunny day and the next we’re fighting in the middle of a hurricane! It was cool, but again, completely out of left field.

It also took too damn long to get going. The first half of the movie was primarily focusing on the subplots and the main plot didn’t even get rolling until the second half of the movie. It wasn’t very interesting either. The subplot with the young man in his apartment building was the most interesting aspect of the movie but I don’t think it was enough to hold the film together.

The fight scenes and hand-to-band combat were pretty badass to watch.

I still love Denzel but his Equalizer movies are definitely bottom tier Denzel.

I think it was an attempt to show that he was out there "equalizing" outside of the main thrust of the story.

This was one of the worst films of the year. They should have made a film of Denzel just Lyfting and talking to the passengers - that was way more interesting than the film itself.

I got that much but what about the old man and the art? And his sister at the end? McCall has nothing to do with that aside from lending an ear to the old guy.

I liked the beginning with the little girl and McCall’s incognito hero existance, and like I said, I mostly enjoyed the subplot with the young man in his building but they just seemed to go no where.

The sequence with him confronting the rich frat boys was awesome though.

I liked it. I’m not a huge Denzel fan, but I’ve liked both Equalizer films a lot. I agree the first is a better film and this one bounces around a lot, but the sequel still entertained me.

Not a fan of Denzel, but this was an OK movie. Not a scratch on the first and rather predictable, but OK.

They weren't really "Frat boys" per se. Seemed like arrogant Wall Street pieces of shit and it looked like they gang raped that girl/call girl.

I really enjoyed McCall beating the shit out of them.

Agree with this. It was o.k. Reminded me of any number of Jason Statham's films.

I haven't seen the movie since the theatrical release, so hopefully someone else can provide more details. Pretty sure McCall used some of his government contacts to get the info on the art, which led to being able to track down the sister.

They're calling back to the original series. McCall isn't just a killing machine, his main goal in life now is to help people. If someone manages to piss him off, well, he'll take care of that too.

McCall handed Melissa Leo's character an envelope and asked her to look into something (which I assume was the matter of the painting (or something connected to it) and she said she handled it in her last conversation with him. There's a deleted scene that makes it all a bit clearer but it was a longer scene.

That makes sense even if it’s super subtle and vague as shit in the movie.
