is there a reviews embargo for this one? seems odd for a Denzel movie and a sequel. hope that's not a bad sign...

Lower than I expected. I’ll probably still check it out but may wait to see a matinee showing.

It's an ok film. Not as good as the first movie.

Re: The Equalizer 2 (Fuqua, 2018) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I saw this back in April at a screening. I’d give it between a B and B+.

I enjoyed it although it’s not definitely not as good as the first one. But, I had a good time seeing Denzel play the McCall character again. There are some bad ass kills and hand to hand combat scenes.

McCall is working as an Uber driver and I enjoyed the scene that the trailer sorta spoils where he beats the shit out of some snotty corporate millennials who rape a girl and tries to dump her off to him as a casual pickup.

Trailers spoiled it, but the storyline revolves around the murder of McCall’s friend Susan. That covers pretty much the last half of the movie. They also go into a conspiracy plot that has a little to do with McCall’s past and former associates. A minor subplot also involves McCall befriending a troubled teen who lives in his building who is a talented artist, but also being pressured to join a neighborhood gang.

The final act does kind of drag a little, but overall it’s a worthy watch.

I didn't even think the first one was all that great, so... shit... I guess I won't run out to see it.

They should have him be a Lyft driver for John Wick.

Yeah, this. The first one was one of Denzel's weaker films, IMO.

I wouldn't rush out and see tonight's showing, but it's IMO worth a weekend or weekday afternoon matinee for an action fix.

But, with the Movie Pass peak pricing bullshit, you probably won't be seeing it this weekend.

Just got back from this. It was ok. Nothing special. The brutality of the kills was cool but the whole conspiracy angle and who was really pulling the string, etc., I'm still trying to figure out where it all goes. The big finale in the abandoned town was cool in terms of violence, but how the hell did we end up there? Too many subplots that led nowhere. At least the first film was consistent.

For me, the big takeaway from Manohla Dargis's mostly favorable review in The New York Times is the fact that Orson Bean is not only still alive but still acting. (He turns 90 on Sunday.)

Nothing special is right. Completely predictable plot. Boring and derivative.

This.

It was free (MoviePass) and I’ll get a free digital copy of the first (Regal deal), so I can’t say I complelty regret the two hours, but I’ll hopefully enjoy the first more.

I liked it just could've been better. The story felt generic and the final battle was blah.

If it's still playing when the wife goes to visit the grands in Texas, I'll catch it then.

Caught this yesterday. I agree with most of the criticisms. Drags a bit at the end and is not as good as the first one, and pretty dang predictable as well. However, for a movie with so much violence it still has a lot of heart and I could watch Washington play this character for several more movies. He's a great actor and seems to do exceptionally well when being directed by either Fuqua or Lee.

This. Mrs. Punch-Out and I love Denzel and hope there are several more Equalizer movies. Predictable a bit, sure...but the heart and humor he adds is great as mentioned. Hopefully with this beating expectations this weekend, we will indeed get at least one more.

Liked his “escape” with the wife and kids. That damn smile of his.

Pedro Pascal getting another eye gouge, lol.

That part got an applause from my audience, which is rare for a matinee crowd.

Saw this on Sunday. The Lyft product placement was quite shameless.

Re: The Equalizer 2 (Fuqua, 2018) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Man this was disappointing. I really enjoyed the first and thought this was a pretty big step down. Denzel is still great but unfortunately is showing his age in this one pretty well. Didn't really care for the subplot with the kid, and was not a fan of the villains motivation or really the villain in general. The finale was interesting but really felt overdone. Honestly I think the best parts are just him doing his vigilante stuff.

I would be down for another movie in this series but was not a fan of this one. 2.5/5 or C+.
