Little Women (2019, D: Gerwig) Ronan, Watson, Pugh, Dern, Scanlen, Chalamet, Streep

“Little Women” is drawing big talent.

Following her critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird,” Greta Gerwig is eyeing “Little Women” as her next directing gig.

A-listers Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are in talks to star in Columbia Pictures’ retelling of the American classic with Florence Pugh also in talks to star. The movie would mark a reunion for Gerwig, Ronan and Chalamet. The young actors starred in 2017’s coming-of-age comedy “Lady Bird.”

The roles are unknown at this time as some castings are still being worked out. Sources tell Variety the studio is expected to test a handful of actresses opposite Stone for the role of Beth before the July 4 holiday.

The project has been set up at Columbia Pictures for some time, with Amy Pascal set to produce with Denise Di Novi and Robin Swicord. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production for Columbia Pictures.

Gerwig was initially brought in to rewrite a draft, but following “Lady Bird’s” success, Sony amped up pre-production in order to woo Gerwig into picking this as her next movie.

The novel by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the March sisters in post-Civil War America, has been adapted several times into feature films, with the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder being the most popular. The BBC’s “Little Women” miniseries aired late last year.

This would mark a major coup for Sony and Pascal, who have always coveted the IP, but wanted to make sure the right pieces were in place before pushing the project forward. If this deal makes, the package of high-profile talent ensures a fast-track into production.

The timing for the ensemble works out as well. Streep is about to finish HBO’s second season of “Big Little Lies” and can be seen next in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Stone had been eyeing several options after wrapping production on “The Favourite,” which is expected to be an awards contender when it opens in November. As for Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” stars, Ronan just finished shooting “Mary Queen of Scots,” which bows in the fall, and Chalamet recently started production on the Netflix pic “The King.”

Not sure why we need another remake. I thought the 1994 version was fine. I admit I was crying like a baby with that one scene
Spoiler:
Jo see her sister Beth died in bed.
Never saw the 1933 version with Katherine Hepburn.

All the actors listed are too old for any of the major parts except for Streep, whom I'm assuming will play the old aunt, Aunt March I think she was called.

This part of the announcement irked me:

The novel by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the March sisters in post-Civil War America, has been adapted several times into feature films, with the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder being the most popular.
I doubt that. That's just the one the press release writer remembers. I'm quite sure the 1949 Technicolor version from MGM with Liz Taylor, June Allyson, Janet Leigh and Margaret O'Brien was seen by way many more people. It was popular in Japan and influenced their own 1980s anime versions. (Of course, two of those actresses were way too old for their parts--Allyson and Leigh.)

And then there is this, opening 9/28/18...

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6495094/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

A modern retelling of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, we follow the lives of four sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March - detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood. Despite harsh times, they cling to optimism, and as they mature, they face blossoming ambitions and relationships, as well as tragedy, while maintaining their unbreakable bond as sisters.

Laura Dern is in talks to join Meryl Streep in Sony's adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic. The movie will reunite Gerwig with her Lady Bird actors Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, who are also in talks to star in the Columbia Pictures project, along with Emma Stone, Florence Pugh and James Norton.

Strange idea. Masterpiece literally just did a three hour version of this last year.

Watching the trailer at the movies today it occurred to me that they didn't cast an American actress for even one of the Marsh sister parts. I mean nothing against Ronan, Watson, the emerging Pugh, or Scanlen who was great in Sharp Objects, but I mean seriously....

I reserved eight seats for the 7 pm show Christmas night. I am looking forward to seeing it. So too, I assume, are the three other people who have also reserved seats for that showing.
I am not expecting robust box office numbers for this

Eh... it'll probably make its production budget back by the New Year if they are lucky. If it doesn't make at least $15-20mil from Wednesday to Sunday, then they will have a problem for sure.

I believe there have been 8 film versions, some TV versions, and even an animated version of Little Women since the 1900's. How come no one complains about "remakes" and "Hollywood running out of ideas" when it comes to films like this? Because it's a "Classic book"?

The one they made two years ago starred Maya Hawke, Kathryn Newton, Emily Watson, and Angela Landsbury.

Yes, I saw that..... 1 person "literally" complained. I'm asking why don't we see mass complaints like we normally do when a remake is announced. Social Media usually loses its shit when remakes are announced but hardly anyone does when "classic book films" are remade.

Decker 12-23-19 04:50 PM

Re: Little Women (2019, D: Gerwig) Ronan, Watson, Pugh, Dern, Scanlen, Chalamet, Streep

It's a given that "classic" books are going to get remade because they're in the public domain and anyone can make a Little Women movie like they can make a Sherlock Holmes movie or a Dracula one. To have a well-known commodity that can be freely adapted by anyone without the author's consent or compensation is a huge enticement.
Plus I'm sure Gerwig had a lot of freedom to choose her second feature to direct - if she wanted to make Little Women with her Lady Bird stars, nobody at Sony Classics was going to complain that Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder and Claire Danes had done a perfectly fine job 25 years before.

I'd say it's mostly because the people that would go to the internet to complain about remakes probably don't care enough about Little Women to bother complaining about it.

Is Ronan going to become DeNiro to Gerwig's Scorsese?
