Doom: Annihilation (2019) -- Reboot of 2005 movie
It's straight to video:
Production wrapped in June. Here are some set photos from the director:
and they started editing a few weeks ago:
Basically this is from the same division of Universal that made all the straight to video Death Race sequels. So don't expect much from this.
While details on the new Doom movie are being kept under wraps, we do know that it is being produced by Universal’s non-theatrical division Universal 1440 Entertainment, with Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, Extraction, Chaos) directing and Amy Manson (Once Upon a Time) and Luke Allen-Gale (Dominion) starring in the cast.
Universal’s first attempt at bringing Doom to the big screen came in 2005, with Andrzej Bartkowiak directing a cast that included Karl Urban, Dwayne Johnson and Rosamund Pike. It was met with a negative reception from fans a critics and bombed at the box office with just $56 million worldwide from a $60 million budget.

I like the first one with The Rock and Karl Urban. Creature effects were done by Stan Winston, so there's that.
This next one will be a DTV, so I'm really not getting the point.

I get the point. Every franchise on this planet with a viable brand name is getting remade (minus Back to the Future.) Someone thinks they can squeeze a couple dollars out of the Doom brand. But the first attempt was a colossal failure, so they are going to do it on a smaller budget with less risk.

While the original is not one of my favorite movies, I have it in my collection and it's survived several cullings, so it's not as horrendous as all that. We were entertained by it which says something about its worth to us. If it was as bad as the critics say it was, it would've been gone a long time ago.
As for a reboot? Why???
Do they think they can squeeze a few more dollars from the sheeple?

Do movies still go direct to video? I thought streaming and all the cable networks had replaced that with their need for content.

Who sat down at a table and thought this would be a good idea?

Of course, it was also available through streaming as well.
BTW, Universal 1440 also has another Death Race (sequel to the reboot series) in the can. Was supposed to come out late last year but was canceled and AFAIK hasn't been rescheduled.

I enjoyed the movie with Dwayne Johnson. It wasn't excellent or anything, but it was decent enough.
I don't have any hope for this DTV movie and haven't really cared about the two actors that's going to be starring in it from the shows I've seen them in.

Comes out on DVD and BD October 1st.
Probably a good chance this will be on Netflix around the same time as well as they've been getting a lot of these Universal DTV releases. Most recently Backdraft 2.

But to answer Abob Teff's question, there's still movies that go DTV, where they premiere as a video release to rent/purchase on various streaming platforms, as well as physical home video releases. Even with networks and streaming services generating an unprecedented amount of content, there's still room for new titles to go DTV.

I think "direct to video" is reserved for a movie that is just being released to home video in general, for rental and/or purchase. This is in contrast to movies that premiere 'exclusively" on a streaming platform, such as the Netflix movie Bright. That went directly to Netflix, but wasn't DTV. Likewise, something the premieres on TV is typically still considered a "TV movie".

This thread would have been better if it was about a sequel to the serious mindflip that is Alex Garlands’ Annihilation.

Re: Doom: Annihilation (2019) -- Reboot of 2005 movie
I rented this from Red Box yesterday and I'll keep my thoughts short. Basically a SyFy channel movie both in terms of acting and production value. Pretty much all no name actors except maybe Louis Mandylor, but he's a big stretch for adding any kind of credibility to this. And yes it's a reboot, so the 2005 movie doesn't exist in this movie's universe. It's very very cheap looking.
and it actually ended on a cliffhanger!! So I guess they want to do a sequel. Unless you absolutely love the Doom IP and have to see and play everything with that name, skip this.

I wonder why this didn't go to Netflix like some of the other Universal direct to video sequels?
