Child's Play Reboot (2019, D: Klevberg)

‘Child’s Play’ Reboot In the Works at MGM From ‘It’ Producers

The doll that claimed he’d be your friend ’til the end is getting a new beginning, as MGM is developing a remake of the 1988 horror classic Child’s Play, sources tell Collider.

Lars Klevberg, who directed the as-yet-unreleased horror movie Polaroid, is set to direct from a script by Tyler Burton Smith, whose credits include Kung Fury and the video game Quantum Break.

It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will produce via their KatzSmith Productions banner, while Aaron Schmidt will serve as an executive producer. Production is slated to start in September in Vancouver.

Plot details remain under wraps so MGM hasn’t confirmed any of this, though Collider has learned that it’s a contemporary reboot involving a group of kids (a la Stranger Things), and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world. That’s right, this doll will be able to do some cool stuff that may have been beyond Chucky 1.0’s grasp. It’s likely that the new doll will be named Chucky, though it’s possible that the doll will have a new name. We haven’t read the script, so we don’t know for sure. All we know is that the original Child’s Play followed Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer who casts a spell that traps his soul inside the body of a Good Guy doll, who is given the name of Chucky.

I don’t understand the point of this if Mancini has been making sequels and just announced a TV show.

I’m surprised to hear this. There was just recently news about a tv series being done by Mancini and we’ve been getting sequels regularly (just had Cult of Chucky last year).

Edit: didn’t see dex’s post when I started mine.

What happened to originality? My goodness.

What is wrong with the first one?

Hollywood has remade other horror classics before, why would this one be off limits?

Do boys even play with these types of dolls anymore? It’s not exactly like “My Buddy” is flying off the shelves in 2018.

I wouldn’t say it’s off limits but it is a bit odd considering there have been a couple sequels within the past few years or so plus the announcement of the tv series. The last couple sequels while not theatrical releases have been pretty decent too. I liked Curse of Chucky more than Cult of Chucky but both were decent.

What is a remake going to accomplish though? Chucky has done it all. He curses, he fornicates, he devil worships etc. What will the remake add this time around? To me probably the remake will subtract. Because Chucky at one time pushed it to the edge.

That is why I find it pointless.

Maybe that's why this doll will be "technologically advanced" compared to the original. It may have some artificial inteligence, be able to access the internet, etc.

I wonder who else besides Brad Dourif would even voice Chucky. You’re never going to top him as that character. The weird thing about this is I always thought there was some hold up with the rights to the Child’s Play name (which is why the films after the third have been fill in the blank of Chucky) and that Mancini was opposed to a remake.

You seem to be under the impression studios think with logic.

I also don't see the point. Mancini and Dourif have been a part of these movies from the beginning, with Tilly being a huge part, too. The last two movies were a great improvement over the middle ones, and there's a TV show being made.

Apparently not. I mean if they didn’t think the last two films would do well enough to release them theatrically but they want to reboot the series which would presumably be a mainstream release that seems like backwards logic. I foresee this turning out like the Annabelle movies or something.

I liked the fact this was one of the few horror series where a reboot/remake/re-whatever hadn't been done and the original continuity remained preserved.

Bummer.

Agreed. Chucky is actually one of my favorite horror characters and I’ve liked most of the films aside from Seed of Chucky. Maybe this will fall apart like the last time they tried to reboot it. The idea of the doll having technological advancements sounds stupid.

Mancini and Kirschner won't be involved with this reboot.

They are developing the potential TV series and continuing the DTV movies.

I doubt 99% of Chucky “fans” have any idea what that even means.

In order to update this, he will need to come back as a killer XBOX.

I'm not really interested in a remake because I still dig what Mancini and Co. are doing but if you make a flick where every kid has a walking/talking interactive "good guy" doll and you have Charles Lee Ray's spirit corrupt the A.I., where he can move from doll to doll at will and rack up a huge body count, it could be cool. Brad Dourif is untouchable, so I say they go a different route. My vote, Michael K. Williams for the new voice of the doll (also think they should name it something else instead of chucky and get a new design).

EXCLUSIVE: Liv Tyler Offered Role In MGM’s CHILD’S PLAY Remake

We have learned that the studio has interest in The Incredible Hulk actress Liv Tyler. If Tyler accepts the offer she would play Andy’s mother Karen. We have reached out to the studio for comment but have heard nothing back as of yet and we will update you on the project as we get closer to the films production start.

It's such a weird and dumb idea to reboot something that's still ongoing and in development for future installments.

Who would have thought we would get an "Elseworld" Child's Play movie since the main franchise still exists. Makes no sense.
