I miss classic Murphy and this looks like it’s a return to form. Looks like a few ‘F’ bombs are dropped too. Honestly, Murphy is funnier when he gets to toss out a few of those.

Also, I’m getting more of a Man on the Moon vibe here than Ed Wood.

This is my most eagerly-anticipated film of the year by FAR. I love that fact that, even though the film seems to be centered specifically on Dolemite and Rudy Ray's quest to get it made, there's a shout-out to Disco Godfather as well. Put your weight on it! It's also kind of cool that Keegan-Michael Key bears a passing resemblance to Jerry Jones.

Local film critic saw 15 movies at TIFF and ranked this #4 best. Said it was hilarious and surprisingly inspirational. Eddie is back and Wesley Snipes steals the movie.
Really looking forward to this.

Didn't realize this was making the rounds at film festivals. I guess Netflix wants this considered for Awards season? I'm sure Golden Globes are in play but Oscars? Maybe original screenplay perhaps.

This was a hard one to get tickets to at TIFF, and I ultimately missed out. I can only hope that it will drive people to see Moore's films, which are beyond inspirational themselves, but somehow I doubt it. The Vinegar Syndrome discs are phenomenal, but I'm sure they won't see a spike in sales. Perhaps Netflix will run them in conjunction with this film? Or maybe they already have them?

Amazon Prime recently added Dolemite.

It's the bonus features on the VS discs that really illustrate what a great story Moore's was. If only more people were into that kind of thing we probably wouldn't need these kinds of bio-movies. Moore was a force of nature in his own right deserves to be watched and re-watched all on his own. But hey, whatever gets the story out there . . .

I know not out, but anyone else really looking forward to this? I really want Murphy to get Oscar I thought he was robbed for for Dreamgirls, but I digress. Still 98% on RT...

Really enjoyed this. Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes were both at the top of their game. Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Murphy have such a sweet relationship in this. Almost makes me wants to watch a Dolemite film which I've never had any interest in.

Variety ran a ridiculous 'primer' yesterday on "12 Blaxploitation Films to know", only three of which (Dolemite, Foxy Brown, Cotton Comes To Harlem) are actual Blaxploitation movies. All the rest are remakes/reboots (Shaft 2019, Superfly), homages (Git You Sucker, Undercover Brother) and oddities like Pootie Tang and Last Dragon. To be fair, the article title in my browser tab, though not on the piece itself, is "Blaxploitation Films: 12 Reboots, Parodies and Originals to Know", and it's written by an intern who apparently researched no further than the "Post-1970's Blaxploitation Films" section of Wikipedia.
Surely if you wanted to prime anyone for a movie like DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, you'd send them first to virtually ALL of Rudy Ray Moore's theatrical films (including MONKEY HUSTLE), and then have them run the gamut of films actually released during that era (the Pam Grier, Jim Brown, Fred Williamson stuff and more) and NOT the silly and often crappy movies included on this list. Recommending a bunch of OTHER homages and satires to someone watching what's essentially another homage (albeit with some actual film history powering it) certainly doesn't give them much context.

Saw Dolemite on Prime right before watching this (which I also enjoyed, hope to see the others too). Great to see Eddie back, Wesley Snipes, chemistry between Eddie Murphy and everyone.

Loved it! I have been a huge Dolemite fan since i saw it in college 20 years ago. Glad Rudy is getting more exposure out of this. At first I was bothered by the film showing scenes from Human Tornado, but I just read this and it makes sense, at least it wasnt a mistake:
Moore's over-the-top sex scene happened as depicted in "Dolemite Is My Name" with the walls shaking and the ceiling coming down.
But the scene took place in director Cliff Roquemore's 1975 Dolemite movie "The Human Tornado." "We realized a lot of the fans' favorite scenes are from 'Human Tornado.' And we figured Rudy Ray Moore is only going to get a biopic once," Alexander says. "So we threw in these gumdrops into the scripts." The tribute is close to the mark. "People will assume we made that up," says "Dolemite Is My Name" director Craig Brewer. "But we made that room exactly the way it was, with the exact same effects."
The original scene is shown during the "Dolemite Is My Name" credits.

Thanks for that post. I was a bit confused thinking there were cut scenes, since that, and a few other scenes weren’t in Dolemite (including the “instant replay” and the puddle splash).

4 out of 5. Eddie's best film since I don't even know when. I really bought into his performance, the world, the emotional genuineness of it all. Highly recommended.

I don't know Dolemite beyond the one film.
When he started playing at the club, I thought that was great.
Inspiring and lots of fun to watch someone pursue their dreams.
I plan on watching this a lot. One of the few Netflix-branded gems. Next up we have the Scorsese movie.

Watched this yesterday. Really liked it. I honestly do not remember if I ever saw Dolemite or just know about it. It was advertised on a bunch of VHS movies I watched many years ago. I had always planned on it. I will have to check a couple of them out. I did not know that it became a pretty big hit back them. Glad it did for him. Eddie really shined in this and so did everyone else.
