There was a criticism about the movie I read that I though rang true... it feels like they made a wikipedia article into a movie.

I mean, going into it, I figured that it was going to show how Han and Chewie met, and how Han won the MF from Lando. Which they did need to have in the movie. I did like that Chewie was going to kill and eat Han when he first saw him; that's a nice, dark little detail. I don't think we needed the Kessel run -- save some stuff for a sequel.

But overall, I did enjoy the movie. Easily my second favorite of the Disney Star Wars movies, after Rogue One.

It was an good sci fi movie but an average Star Wars movie. It really had no shot of being overly successful because Han Solo IS Harrison Ford, and that kid just couldn't hold Ford's jock.

Now that I went 4k I’m watching the series on Disney+. I thought it was so so the first time I watched it, but watching it directly after the prequel trilogy, it seems way better.

Most movies are going to seem better following the prequel trilogy.

Very true.
I think there are some really good parts in it. Once they get to Kessel, I think the movie really shines. Sure you see Lando’s Jedi disguise which was unnecessary, but I liked seeing the group finally bond.
That shot of that star destroyer blocking them on the way out is pretty great, plus I’m a sucker for large Lovecraft style monsters and that giant motherfucker in the maelstrom was awesome.
It is unfortunate we probably wont get a sequel. I wanted more Han, Chewbacca and Lando adventures. I always hoped they’d incorporate Boba Fett in some way. It definitely felt like in Empire and Jedi there was a history there. Maybe it was just wishful thinking.

I liked when "12 parsecs" was just Han Solo trying to bullshit Obi-Wan and not "I have a better GPS than other people".
I think it's basically a fine, fun movie that explains things that were unnecessary and in doing so removes some magic. Not every question needs an answer and not every little thing needs to be expanded upon. That has to be my single biggest gripe with Disney Star War. Stop explaining stuff that's already working as is or has already been memed to death. Chewie's medal was stupid too. So was the Reylo kiss (and the lightsaber teleportation). Stop trying to give fans what you think they want and add some mystery back into Star Wars.

I think that's a remnant from the Phil Lord and Chris Miller version, which was likely going to be more irreverent and meta with self-parody, based on their other works. Think of like the 21 Jump Street movie, but set in the Star Wars universe.

I agree that there are parts of the film where it tries too hard to go into the minute details that don’t need explanation. Overall though I really like it a lot. Still think there would be plenty of room for a sequel or Disney+ series.

I too would love a sequel with same cast. It was hinted with Tatooine and we know that mission Beckett was talking about was for Jabba. And we certainly know how that ended. But that adventure and so many more or at least one more could be told and I wouldn’t mind Ron Howard coming back. This was a lot of fun. Of course flaws, but nothing that can’t be fixed. I wish another would be considered sometime. Was this one a total bomb WW?

I think there's a lot to be said of keeping some ambiguity in these things. Not every question needs an answer.

Maybe Han was just bullshittin' and didn't know what he was talking about. Or maybe the "twelve parsecs" was that he ran in a shorter distance than anyone else.

I think that, with things like this, it's more interesting to debate them and consider both sides than it is to have a definitive answer.

One thing that I find interesting about the prequels is that when you watch AOTC and ROTS, you can sort of fill in some blanks and come to the conclusion that Padme and Obi-Wan had a fling some time before AOTC, and that's one of the things that put a rift between Anakin and Obi-Wan. (Reading this into the prequels actually makes them a bit more tolerable for me.)

But it's not something I would necessarily want to be canonized. I think it's more interesting to leave it ambiguous and open to interpretation.

In storytelling, some things need to be explained, and some things don't. And it takes wisdom and instincts to know what to do.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (Howard, 2018) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

So I just happened to catch part of this on TNT.

Does anyone else who has seen this on TNT think it looks better than either the theatrical exhibition or the blu-ray? It definitely seems brighter and better lit than it did previously. Less muddy, better colors, and more shadow detail.

I tried to do a side-by-side with the blu-ray, but it's hard to flip back and forth between the two on my tv, and I can't do a full side-by-side.

Solo was just on TNT (it's about to start again) and I caught most of it. I forget, why are we supposed to hate this movie again? This is a lot of fun. I would watch several sequels. I hope that window isn't closed.

And yes, Josh, I was impressed with how this looked.

I think the movie is highly entertaining, but nothing that sticks with you. It's pretty forgettable.

I mostly agree, except I wouldn't call it "highly" entertaining. It's... fine.

It came out barely three months after TLJ and emotions were still raw over Luke’s treatment in that movie, and then there were (and probably still are) a group of people mad about the casting of young Han because they wanted somebody who looked a smidge more like young Harrison Ford and I can’t even remember their name. And also, the droid was too woke.

But I think it’s a lot of fun, and I definitely would have loved to see more stories with young Han and Lando.

^ Don’t forget how Han got his last name.

I agree with Jay G. It’s not great and it’s not a bad movie, it’s just...fine.

One of my favorite criticisms of the movie is that it often came off like the filmed a wikipedia article. This is how he got his name. This is how he met Chewie. This is how he got his blaster. Here is the Kessell Run. Here's how he acquired the Millennium Falcon from Lando.

Going into a movie such as this, I would expect it to show how he hooked up with the Wookie, and how he won the Millennium Falcon from Lando. Everything else is surplus to requirements.

I agree with Jay G. It’s not great and it’s not a bad movie, it’s just...fine.
It's generally good. Not great, not bad.

On a grading scale, it's a solid "B."

I’d put it at a C+ or B- . I think the most telling thing for me personally is when I rank all the Star Wars movies, post OT, I tend to forget this movie even exists.

decent sci fi movie.

just wasn't necessary, and the kid never felt like Han Solo.

plus the bloated do-over budget didn't help with its return at the box-office.

If Disney+ would have been around at the time I feel like Solo would have been better suited for it. It’s really not a bad movie, but it just isn’t something that probably needed a big theatrical release. A Disney+ series or possibly a movie would have been better.
