The Last Movie Star (2017, Adam Rifkin) S: Burt Reynolds, Ariel Winter

Didn't see a thread on this, so I thought I'd start one.

Anyone given this a watch yet? Just finished it myself, and I have to admit it was better than I thought it was going to be. I'll have to watch it again to kind of re-absorb anything I might have missed the first time, and to decide fully how good of a film it was, but upon the one viewing, I have to say I've been reminded of how much I really like Burt Reynolds as an actor. Being forced to watch Ariel Winter bounce around in next to nothing distracted a little from the story, and I don't know if her attire was really necessary for her character, but acting-wise she did okay for her part. This movie was all Burt's, though.

I'm sure I could find out by searching, but as of this writing I'm not sure why they changed the name of the movie from Dog Years to The Last Movie Star. Having watched it, I'm sure Dog Years was both a metaphor for Vic's (Burt's character's) life, and a connection to the opening and ending scenes that bookmarked the whole project. But, thinking about it now, I think Last Movie Star was probably a better title, as Dog Years would probably have put too much emphasis on the previously mentioned metaphor (not trying to spoil anything for people who haven't seen it). Instead, they seem to have chosen a title that better allows the viewer to get involved with the story of a man coming to grips with his life thus far and whatever may lay ahead.

Not sure how many stars people around here usually rate films on, but on my one viewing, I would give it 2-1/2 out of 4 stars.

I didn't see it, but it played a local film festival last year here under the name Dog Years. A local film critic got to interview Burt. I was unaware that the title has since changed.

Those are the streaming ones I know about. It's also available on disc pretty much everywhere. Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc.

It is his swan song to his movie career and probably life too.

The girl was annoying though.

I love this movie. It's a good story, funny, endearing, bittersweet. It was the last movie Reynolds made, and reflects on an aging actor nearing the end. When all the news stations were showing clips from his films this week I wondered why none of them showed anything from this film. It was perfect.

Yeah, kind of the perfect finale for Reynolds. Reminds me of A Prairie Home Companion movie being Robert Altman's final film.

Cause news stations are lazy as shit when it comes to stuff like this. They pull out some shots from his “greatest hits” catalog and call it a day. Of all the reports I saw last week I really only saw clips from Smokey and the Bandit, Deliverance, and The Longest Yard with a couple b&w photos of his younger days sprinkled in.

Saw this over the weekend. And the movie does what you describe, using actual old photos and clips of Burt to show the younger "Vic Edwards". Hell, they even
Spoiler:
CGI'd Vic into two of the three movies you cite

I'm glad I saw this AFTER Burt died. I think it would have been incredibly depressing to see it with him alive, as it was clear he had very little time left.

RE: Ariel Winter. I thought she did a good job, her performance in the scene where she lists all the drugs she's tried was a hell of a piece of acting. I only wish she had
Spoiler:
gotten back with Bjorn
at the end of the film, as it would have been more in character for her to not learn anything from her time with Vic. But I'm just pessimistic like that.

I got this on Blu from Netflix (yes, that's still a thing), so I'll be giving the commentary a listen this weekend.
