Climax (2018, D: Gaspar Noé) S: Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermic

There are few provocateurs in modern cinema quite like Gaspar Noé. The filmmaker stunned audiences with the intense rape drama “Irreversible,” tried to give them seizures with “Enter The Void,” and pushed himself to the edges of pornography with “Love.” Now, the director is setting up his next picture and is staying decidedly #OnBrand.

Details of the project, titled “Psyché” (yep, psyche) have emerged from funding group Tax Shelter Belgium, and fan site Les Temps Detruit Toups. Budgeted at €2.6 million (or about $3.1 million U.S.) the film will take viewers back to the ’90s, with another story about drugs, perception, and madness. You know, the usual. Here’s the synopsis:

In the mid 90’s, about twenty urban dancers joined together for a 3-day rehearsal in a closed down boarding school located at the heart of a forest, to share one last dance. They then make one last party around a large sangria bowl.

Quickly, the atmosphere becomes charged and a strange madness will seize them the whole night. If it seems obvious to them that they have been drugged, they neither know by who nor why. And it’s soon impossible for them to resist to their neurosises and psychoses, numbed by the hypnotic and the increasing electric rythm of the music… While some feel in paradise, most of them plunge into hell.

The picture is set for an incredibly brief two-week shoot, and if I understand things correctly, the first cut could be ready by June. So, could there be a new Gaspar Noé film on the festival circuit by the end of the year? Possibly. That said, Tax Shelter Belgium does say that filming is supposed to be wrapped this month, but with no announced cast members, it’s unclear if it has already gone into production on the sly or has been delayed. Either way, Noé has something brewing, and it’s likely to melt your eyeballs again.

I'm in!

Even though Love was IMO his weakest film, it still had some good moments.

Agree with both of you. Really didn't care too much for Love, but I've loved everything else he's ever done so I'm really looking forward to this...

I know Adam Driver works a LOT and has no problem with nudity. Seemed plausible.

Another case where a negative review sells it for me:

"Climax" works, at least when it's willing to be a human drama. But then it sinks in that you're watching "Fame" directed by the Marquis de Sade with a Steadicam.

re: Climax (2018, D: Gaspar Noé) S: Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermic

I was living in Nashville,TN when Irreversible came out . Since it was a decent sized city I was actually able to find a DVD of "I Stand Alone" to rent and watched it two days before I saw Irreversible. Naturally I felt like an insider at the beginning of the new movie. The Belcourt in Hillsboro Village was the arthouse that showed the movie, and the grindhouse nature of the theater really helped the way that movie ended. I've never seen Noe's follow-ups to his first two movies, but am curious if they segue into one another in a similar style.

Also need to actually watch Love. I thought I Stand Alone/Irreversible/Enter the Void was such an untouchable trifecta of cinematic growth and mastery that I didn't want to spoil it if Love wasn't that good. But this looks great, so there you go ...

re: Climax (2018, D: Gaspar Noé) S: Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermic

This was alright-to-good, I felt the second act dragged on way too long, some of the on-screen text was hammy, and it was (not actually a spoiler but just to be safe)
Spoiler:
nowhere near as dark as his other work.

And yet, I can't completely shake the movie. The way Noe makes everything feel more like an experience you need a shower after rather than a movie is also in full effect.
