Now that they seem to have added what appear to be overt sci-fi elements (especially in that first trailer; was that some kind of time travel machine?) I could see them pushing this well beyond three movies, FINAL DESTINATION-style, each one debuting bigger, more effects-y setpieces and inserting some new variation into the original timeline. Like the FAST AND FURIOUS of horror films. Car stunts! Airplanes! Spaceships! The humor is what really sets this series apart, though. It's not that other recent horror films haven't indulged in levity here and there, but this one goes all in and still maintains the tension. The fact that they're releasing this on Valentine's Day suggests the marketing gurus were well-armed with viewer demographics from the first picture.

Re: Happy Death Day 2U (2019, D: Landon) -- S: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard

Saw it this afternoon since I had a dentist appointment and took the day off. I don't feel like it was as good as the first one, but it's a sequel and they never are. I just feel like they should've moved on to another day and got a whole new thing going rather than going the direction they did. Still, it was fun and there are worse movies out there for sure. Plus, there's still some things they didn't really answer and the "ending after the credits" seemed kind of mean-spirited.

Yeah, I was lingering behind because I was answering a text I got during the movie and I got surprised by it. But there's a post-credits scene, yes.

Just got back. It was good, but it is nowhere near as good as the first. Rothe, of course, steals the show. It is way more sci-fi than the first.

The credits scene is only mid-way through.

Agreed.

I actually thought opening, with the Asian dude, that was clunky and it made the film draaaaaaag. Once Rothe came into the picture, it was on.

Re: Happy Death Day 2U (2019, D: Landon) -- S: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard

Just got back. It was pretty good, but yeah definitely not as good as the 1st. The 1st one was comedy-horror, but this one went more into science fiction. Oh and this is a direct continuation of the 1st movie. It literally picks up where the last movie left off.

The best part obviously is Jessica Rothe. Great standout and good comedic timing. I think she would make a good lead in a comedy in the future.

They did a good job making it fun without being too repetitive of the 1st movie's elements.

Recommended if you were a fan of the 1st movie.

I'd agree with the comments above. Enjoyable film, especially if you liked the first one.

It was mentioned that this one had more of a sci-fi element to it. It's probably more difficult to call this one a true horror film. In addition to the sci-fi angle, it tried harder to be a comedy...

Spoiler:

(specifically when the group had to steal the machine), along with the "romance" approach with Tree choosing between Carter and her mom.

Enjoyed it, and liked the new cast additions. Wiki says a third instalment is unlikely ...why? This one made 7x its budget, so I would have thought a sequel would have been greenlit?

But made half of what the original made overall.

Unless it pulls an Austin Powers/John Wick and kills it on VOD/home video, it's unlikely it'd be a continuing franchise, which imo would be a mistake.

I like moderately low budget somewhat clever movies between my $200 - 300m CG orgies.

But why. It made 7x it's budget, why isn't that very lucrative?

Again, because it made HALF of what the original made. It opened 63% below the first film's Fri-Sun debut.

You also aren't factoring in the cost of marketing, the theatre's cut, etc.

What the first made is irrelevant. Suppose film 1 on a budget of 10 million makes 1 Billion. And film 2 on the same budget makets $500 million. Still super lucrative.

To the best of my knowledge, a film need to get 2x it's budget to break even because of the factors you mentioned, which this film did, and more.

It is completely relevant. It means the audience isn't interested, especially with how strong the first one performed and the word of mouth around it. At this level of budget, you don't continue making movies in a franchise if they don't out perform predecessors. The example you've given does not apply to this level of budget. That's not how Blumhouse generally operates their business model. It's not just about what this film made, but what could be a trend for the franchise. It would be a gamble.

Say they make a part 3 at the same budget (though it would be unlikely, as the actors will probably want raises if they need to renegotiate, but still in same ballpark) and it performs even worse than 2. They would barely break even.

It shows diminishing returns vs entry #1 which means loss of interest. Additionally, while it made 7x its Production Budget, the marketing spend was likely $20 - $30m (a conservative estimate). Rule of thumb dictates about 50% of ticket sales (so it made back about $32m), so while it's definitely not a huge loss for the studio at this stage (cable/streaming sales, etc; ), it may not be worth the risk of doing a #3 unless it shows popularity and interest on the home market.

To note on advertising costs, it was noted that they kept those pretty low compared to obvious blockbusters (I think Transformers Age of Extinction that had a $200m advertising campaign, $100m here and $100m abroad. And these are 2014 numbers.) but it's still multiple times the budget of the actual movie.

Pretty much this and really worked great watching it back to back with the first film...
