Re: Avengers: Infinity War (Russo Bros., 2018) The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread
From my review page, Orbi-Wan Goes To The Movies:
Avengers: Infinity War (PG-13) - Brolin’s turn as the Mad Titan Thanos is actually the heart of this astounding culmination of 10 years of Marvel movie storytelling
Marvel’s long-game continues as practically everyone who’s played an important role in the MCU for the past decade is either present or gets a name-check in Avengers: Infinity War. The original Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, our new friends from Wakanda, the Sorcerer Supreme, Spider-Man - they all unite to defend the universe from Thanos, the giant purple Titan who's been primarily in the background on the hunt for the six Infinity Stones - gems of great power scattered throughout the galaxy.
The Russo Brothers, who directed both Winter Soldier and Civil War, are once again at the helm with Infinity War, and do an incredible job balancing dozens of characters, mixing and matching personalities and tossing them into interesting and desperate situations. Pretty much ALL of the humor is based on this new blend of Avenger/Guardian/everyone else team-ups, and the movie is better for it, especially when the plot takes its inevitable and expected turn toward despair and yes, tragedy.
The heart, and key, to Avengers: Infinity War lies squarely on your acceptance of Josh Brolin’s truly moving performance as Thanos. Unlike past comic book movie villains, his motivation is not as simple as universal rule and domination. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Having seen his entire civilization destroyed by overpopulation and depletion of resources, Thanos has one goal only - the restoration of balance to the universe through the immediate and impartial elimination of half the universe’s population, something he can accomplish with the snap of his fingers once he’s gathered the Stones in the golden gauntlet he wears.
While this is at once an appalling and horrific plan, Thanos’ dedication and willingness to sacrifice whatever it takes is reflected in Brolin’s portrayal, even through Thanos’ CGI visage. It’s a burden he feels he has no choice but to bear, no matter the personal cost. I am definitely NOT on Thanos’ side, but like Killmonger in “Black Panther”, you understand his twisted logic.
Without getting into spoiler territory here, there are some things to understand BEFORE you go into Avengers: Infinity War. One, this is the culmination of 10 years of storytelling, and it really helps to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of what’s been going on in all the movies (yes, including Thor: The Dark World. Sorry.) Two, this is only part 3 of the Avengers saga, so despite what happens at the end of this film, we have not seen the whole story yet. Part 4 is coming in one year. Three, it is very important that, between the jokes and wisecracks, you LISTEN to what’s being said about the situation, plans of attack, and possible outcomes, Even some comments made in the heat of battle have significance. Trust me, you’ll feel better for it. Finally, four, the end-credit scene is important on a couple of different levels, if you know what you are looking at.
Avengers: Infinity War is exactly what was promised: high action with true stakes, and an emotional rollercoaster of epic proportions. I’m giving Avengers: Infinity War 4.5 out of 5 lightsabers.
NOTES TO PARENTS: MILD SPOILERS AHEAD - Avengers: Infinity War is rated PG-13 for high levels of sci-fi/comic book style action and violence, a bit of language and some crude comments. As Thanos and his crew advance through the movie, many are killed and some bodies are seen. Bodies are shown floating in space. In the film’s climax, the situation becomes dire, some well-known and popular characters are killed. Sh** and other profanities are heard from time to time. Overall, Infinity War is darker that most Marvel entries, so it may not appropriate for younger than pre-teen children.
MID- AND AFTER-CREDIT SCENES: There is NO mid-credit scene, but there is ONE important after-credit scene.

Saw it Thursday for fan night. My third in a row (Thor, Black Panther and this one) and wasn't a full theater - bit surprised with that.
This was the most enthusiastic crowd yet with lots of reactions throughout the movie. For me, agree that this one is in the top tier of the MCU movies so far. Lots of emotion and set up for the next one.
Biggest reaction was at the end with the Captain Marvel logo. I didn't get it at first but someone shouted out, "Oh, sh*t. Captain Marvel." then the crowd erupted.

Instead of binge-watching Marvel movies to get up to speed for Infinity Wars, I've got a ton of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai movies to binge-watch. I can see five of these in the time it takes to travel to the theater, buy a ticket, sit through Infinity Wars and travel back home. And I don't have to worry about so many arcane plot points. And the catering budget for Infinity Wars could easily fund ten years worth of Kamen Rider films, which come out every year.

I went back to see this again last night in a larger theater. I don't think I've ever gone to see the same film two nights in a row before. It was just as good the second time. People were audibly in shock at that ending.
I still think the only mistake Marvel made, and they know it, was announcing that Homecoming sequel and calling IW "parts 1 & 2". Would have made the next year's wait more interesting since we wouldn't have a clue whats next.

Posted this in Ant-Man and the Wasp thread, but will its mid and end credit scenes sync up with IW, or flashback with Hank to the 90s and introduce Carol Danvers pre-Captain Marvel, or maybe SHIELD’s first encounter with Mar-Vel? Ant-Man had the Civil War clip, so I’m interested to see where they will go...

The credit sequences usually go towards selling another movie. Avengers: IW already hinted at Captain Marvel, so maybe Ant-man will show what is going on with Hawkeye since the two characters were lumped together as, "taking deals".

Can’t remember if this has been mentioned, but the question of why Thor now has two eyes has been answered. Ewwwwwwwwwww....

Totally random odd question (though not, apparently, the oddest question asked in this thread today) : While waiting for the post-credit I saw a credit about a character from Arrested Development being property of Fox Television. What was that about? I don't recall any Arrested Development joke or sight-gag.
Really? Huh. So what is the connection? Did the Russos work on AD?

One other thing I forgot to ask ... why did they CG Don Cheadle’s head on to that itty-bitty body (like they did with Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger)? Or does he just look that weird now?

Yeah, noticed that first thing in that first scene with Cheadle, he looked like a cancer patient or crack addict.

Yeah just like I suspected the ending could have been a bit better with a back shot of a Thanos looking at the sunset and then slumping over. It would have given the movie a pyrrhic victory for both sides that would have made it a contained movie as opposed to part 1.
That said, It was still an amazing movie, showing how well the past ten years have had such great character development that all this movie is is Thanos story without any need to develop the heroes. It was a constant beat after beat of story and plot movement that was so great.

I thought it was to show his muscle mass has deteriorated significantly since being effectively paralyzed in CW.

I was half-way joking — I didn’t watch much of it, but I thought he actually looked like that on Kimmel. Kind of like a Don Cheadle bobblehead.

I thought it was very good. Long but it never felt that way and I was impressed how they were able to juggle so many characters. A few things:
I was really bummed about Heimdall and Lokis deaths.
I knew it wouldn't happen, but man I wanted to see Beta Ray Bill at some point during the search for Stormbreaker.
Speaking of Stormbreaker it fucking rules that it's handle is Groot.
Red Skulls appearance was awesome.

I loved that this film went there....nothing like an ending that could have been lifted from Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, even the post credits bit was a downer. You could hear a pin drop as the credits started to roll.
Great film...and again, wow, they had the balls to go there. It will be interesting to see who does or does not put in an appearance in the next film.
