Either alone or to showcase for friends. Nothing to do with the gear itself, but throughout the years, what movie scenes or set pieces are your go-tos?

Wow so many movies but I will mention a few. Back when I had a great sound stage of Klipsch Reference Series my showcases were:

The Rock Criterion
The Fifth Element
Antz
The Prince of Egypt

Any flying scenes on the Top Gun Bluray. The Space Battles in Return of the Jedi. I never upgraded to blu, but the Opening scene of Atlantis: The Lost Empire on dvd still rocks my home theater setup.

Not great for color demonstration maybe, but I always liked the lobby scene in the Matrix for sound demo.

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

When DVD and DTS was all the rage back in the early days(late 90's) I had a DTS Demo disc that had stuff on it; and my fave was a scene from "Dragonheart" where the dragon was talking to the Hero Dennis Quaid who was riding on his horse. What made it cool was the dragon was circling him so the surround speakers got to shine showcasing the flapping dragon wings and Sean Connery speaking all around the room. They did a great job on that.

The first 10 minutes of Terminator 2. I have never come across any movie that is a better way to test the quality of a new sound system or TV.

Does anything beat Lobby Shooting Spree from The Matrix? Can't count the amount of times I played that for people in 5.1 when the DVD came out.

Blade Runner’s opening sequence/credits. Great visuals and a music score that makes a home theater system come alive like few movies do.

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

Depends, some I use to demo picture with 4K or 3D. Some I'll demo sound with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X. List fluctuates based on something new I may have gotten or who I'm demoing to. But the usual's are:

Pacific Rim (Atmos, 3D)
Blade Runner (4K, Atmos)
Gravity (3D, Atmos seperate discs)
Planet Earth II (4K)
Terminator Genesys (Atmos)
Game of Thrones, various seasons, but Season 7 mostly (Atmos)
The Revenant (4K, Atmos)
Logan (Atmos)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (4K, Atmos)
Thor: Raganarok (4K, Atmos)

Those are just more recent ones, but UHD is is killing out blu for me.

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

Opening scene in Strange Days is great for showing off surround, with lots of dialogue coming from the rears. I have the DTS laserdisc, I'll get the Blu-Ray from Germany eventually if it doesn't come out here.

Of course, THIS is the ultimate sound demo :

And this is actually some of the best 3D I've ever seen:

(It plays in true 3D on my TV's YouTube app, but my computer will only show it in crappy red and blue 3D so YMMV.)

Sound- pre-credit sequence of Tomorrow Never Dies. Has the control room sounds at location Bond is being monitored. Directional machine gun fire. Two separate jet engines in cat and mouse chase through mountains.
Ice Station Zebra. Scene of sub moving under the ice with various chunks of ice bouncing off the hull.

Picture-various Technicolor films from 50s and 60s.

Yep, The Matrix lobby scene was my go-to, followed closely by the opening of Atlantis. There is a bass hit in that that crushes a subwoofer.

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

I sometimes like to demo subtle surround sound changes. I show people the scene in KB1 where the Bride walks to the restroom. At first you hear the band playing in the front and as she walks across the floor you can hear the change of the band's music from the front to the rears as you follow the bride. It then goes back again to front and you see Sofie Fatale walking to the bathroom and soundtrack does the same thing again. Really cool if your paying attention.

The scene where the rest of the 88's arrive at the restaurant has good surrounds, also.

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

For picture to test the colors, I used the opening race in Speed Racer. Hell 95% of that movie could be used for demo material for a 4k tv.

for sound
opening chase Mad Max Fury Road (same for picture)
first truck chase Terminator 2
lobby scene Matrix

Re: What have been your favorite “demo scenes” when watching movies at home?

Opening scene of Apocalypse Now with the chopper sounds, along with the helicopter attack

Sucker Punch may suck as a movie, but the WWII fantasy scene seriously rocks the surround

The opening battle scene in Master of Commander is phenomenal in demo-ing surround sound. Much as I hate the Transformers movies, they do an admiral job in demo both visual and sound quality when robots clash.
