re: "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" -- Mr. Rogers Documentary

Apparently he also testified in favor of recording TV programs on VHS and Beta in order to watch them at a later time:

Some public stations, as well as commercial stations, program the Neighborhood at hours when some children cannot use it ... I have always felt that with the advent of all of this new technology that allows people to tape the Neighborhood off-the-air, and I'm speaking for the Neighborhood because that's what I produce, that they then become much more active in the programming of their family's television life. Very frankly, I am opposed to people being programmed by others. My whole approach in broadcasting has always been "You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions." Maybe I'm going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.

I can picture this. I had a neighbor/Scout leader who was probably the nicest person I've ever met, but he was very finicky about how things were done and if they weren't done to his specifications, he would rip you a new one in his way, a way that was as polite as could be, explaining why it had to be done that way and never involved a cross word or raising his voice.

I would rather be yelled at 1000 times over that!

FYI, check the movie's website to see where it will be playing near your city:

http://focusfeatures.com/wont-you-be...ghbor/theaters

Looks like it will be playing near me on June 29th. It's in very limited release this Friday.

I'll be waiting until the 29th. Will definitely be seeing this.

Saw this yesterday at the Alamo Drafthouse with a friend.

Fantastic Documentary. Not a single dry eye in the house.

If Mr. Rogers had lived near Mabuse, I am sure the words "Won't you be my neighbor?" would have never been uttered again by him.

I actually love Mr. Rogers. I used to watch him every day. I love him so much I watched a doc called Me and Mr. Rogers. I just don’t need another.

re: "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" -- Mr. Rogers Documentary

Was finally able to catch this driving to a theater 40 mins away. I don't know why this isn't getting a wider release.

This was a great movie. Very well done. I think it was great that it mainly allowed Mr. Rogers to speak for himself. Everything that they brought up was tightly corroborated by his own words in previous interviews. It was a very real look at how he really did care about children. The best parts were seeing how genuine he was with his interactions with children. I love how they ended it as well. It was a very creative way of allowing those close to him that were interviewed pay tribute to him by allowing them to partake in one of his exercises. He truly was a great man and an inspiration to millions. It's really depressing to think that that show would never exist nowadays with our hectic app driven lives. Kids today are just way too impatient for that format.

Watch it. Seek it out. I love supporting movies like this and it's just such a positive movie which is pretty rare nowadays. It's good for the soul.

How many documentaries pull in huge numbers? If it picks up steam they can always adjust the release footprint.

Seeing this next week. Just wondering, though... I imagine this will still be moderately entertaining for a five year old, yes?

I'm planning tentatively to see this movie this afternoon. Turns out it opened at a local theatre near me on Friday. Since this is such a limited release, I want to see it before it's booted for a major summer release.

Super Size Me made $11M+ on a measley $65K budget. But, I recall that had a lot of buzz and it grew.
But yeah it's very rate for documentaries to become box office hits.

Exactly. Which is why I think it has potential to make some money. Put just a little bit of money in marketing and open it wide and ride the wave of positive reviews and buzz.

I saw this on Sunday afternoon and my showing sold out. Granted, I saw it at a very small arthouse theater, but I guess that's why it's playing on a couple of their screens. It may not do Michael Moore numbers (at his peak), but I could definitely see it making a nice chunk of change if it went wide.

As for the movie itself, I loved it. Very few movies will make me tear up, but this did it. He was one of those rare people that are just a big ball of kindness, caring, and sincerity. (Like Richard Simmons.) We're all so loud, angry, and polarized these days that it was refreshing to see that if only for a couple of hours.
