Disney's Lady and the Tramp -- live action (2019, D: Bean)

Charlie Bean, who directed The Lego Ninjago Movie, is going to the dogs.

Bean has closed a deal to helm the live-action/CG hybrid remake of Disney’s animated classic, Lady and the Tramp.

Brigham Taylor, who worked on the studio’s remake of The Jungle Book, is producing the project, which is looking to be made for Disney’s digital streaming service that will launch in 2019.

The service will have four to six movies a year among content that will include film and TV offerings from Disney brands Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars.

The fact that a remake of such a marquee and essential Disney title such as Lady and the Tramp will likely head to the service is another example of how serious Disney is taking the service’s content. (The company recently hired Jon Favreau to write and exec produce a live-action Star Wars television series.)

Tramp, released in 1955, told the love story between a pampered Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a streetwise mongrel named Tramp. Lady finds herself out on the street after her owners have a baby and is saved from a pack by Tramp, who tries to show her to live her life footloose and collar-free. More doggone adventures ensue.

The centerpiece of the movie is the candlelit spaghetti dinner in an alley while two human cooks sing and play "Bella Notte," considered one of the most iconic scenes in Disney and movie history.

Andrew Bujalski penned the script for the remake.

Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier are overseeing for Disney.

Bean is a longtime animator who has written on Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack and directed 18 out of the 19 episodes of Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising before making his feature debut with Ninjago. Tramp now trampolines the director into the live-action world while still keeping him tethered to animation.

He is repped by Verve.

So will every Disney cartoon get a live action remake now? if so I think it would be fun to see what could be done with Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

My guess is this will be mostly CG with some real dogs used for certain shots. My casting:

Amy Adams as voice of Lady
Matthew McConnaghey as Tramp
Tommy Lee Jones as Trusty

Lots of people seem to enjoy these remakes. I'm not snobbish enough to complain and deny people what they obviously want. The originals are still available. No one is forcing you to see these.

re: Disney's Lady and the Tramp -- live action (2019, D: Bean)

EXCLUSIVE: Extras and Sherlock Gnomes actress Ashley Jensen is the first cast aboard for Disney’s Lady And The Tramp reboot, I understand.

Jensen has landed a supporting role in the anticipated pic voicing Scottish Terrier Jackie (in the original movie it was Jock), a loyal supporter to Lady. Disney is currently gathering lead and supporting cast on the movie, which could potentially go into production later this year.

Disney recently tapped The Lego Ninjago Movie director Charlie Bean to helm the live-action/CG hybrid update of the animated classic, which is a priority project for the studio’s as-yet-untitled streaming service slated to launch in late 2019.

The movie will be an exclusive to the service — which will include film and TV content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm — and it won’t have a theatrical run.

If he did, he’d die halfway through filming it.

No theatrical run? Guess it just turned into a free rental at the library.

It’s an exclusive to the Disney streaming service.

Supposedly the rumor was they were looking at a lower price point so you might not be that far off.

re: Disney's Lady and the Tramp -- live action (2019, D: Bean)

Tessa Thomspon will voice the upscale Cocker Spaniel opposite Justin Theroux's Tramp in Disney's Lady and the Tramp.

The Lego Ninjago Movie filmmaker Charlie Bean is directing the remake, expected to debut on Disney's upcoming digital streaming service, which launches in 2019. Andrew Bujalski wrote the script for Lady and the Tramp, and Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier are overseeing for Disney.

Ashley Jensen is set to play Scottish Terrier Jackie, while Doctor Strange star Benedict Wong has been set to voice English bulldog Bull. Kiersey Clemons will play human character Darling, the owner of Lady.

Thompson is currently in theaters with Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You and will star in the Men In Black spin-off, opposite her Thor: Ragnarok colleague Chris Hemsworth. She is repped by Greene & Associates, Mosaic and Jackoway Austen.

re: Disney's Lady and the Tramp -- live action (2019, D: Bean)

After enjoying Disney's live action Jungle Book and Cinderella I was really looking forward to this since Lady and the Tramp is my favorite Disney film, but the exclusivity to a streaming service (which will not be getting this Disney fan's money) has, among other things, killed my interest.

Turning Jock into Jackie is a sure sign they're screwing with the story, and (to me) and an indicator the story is going to be a contemporary version (likely replete with hamfisted allusions to contemporary mores) instead of the delightful period piece the original is.

Inasmuch as I enjoyed it, I'm afraid we're going to get a repeat of what was wrong with the live action Cinderella. Nearly 50% longer than the original with most of that time being devoted to emphasizing the cruel unpleasantness of Cinderella's life... particularly with her step-mother and step-sisters. In tone, it's a very "dark" movie compared to the animated version... unlike the live action Jungle Book.

Re: Disney's Lady and the Tramp -- live action (2019, D: Bean)

This is the problem with live action remakes. It’s utterly absurd that two human characters would be singing for a pair of dogs. It works in animation because the characters are wildly caricatured, but this just don’t work.
