Honey Boy (2019, D: Har’el) S: LaBeouf, Hedges, Jupe

Oscar-nominated actor Lucas Hedges is in negotiations to star in HONEY BOY, an indie movie written by Shia LaBeouf that is based on the actor’s childhood and his explosive relationship with his father, the Tracking Board has exclusively learned.

Israeli-American filmmaker Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach) is directing the indie, which is being produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Chris Leggett. Production is slated to start in May in Los Angeles.

Honey Boy takes its title from LaBeouf’s father’s nickname for young Shia, whose alter ego here is Otis Lort. According to Showbiz 411, Otis is a 12-year-old kid who’s a rising star on TV, but his life revolves around his father James, an ex-con and recovering drug addict. James is a terrific conversationalist, but an utterly unreliable father. 10 years later, Otis is well on his way to being a trainwreck himself, having become unemployable in the movie industry. He is diagnosed as suffering from childhood PTSD… and then his estranged father comes calling once again.

LaBeouf will play James, while Hedges is nearing a deal to play Otis at age 22. The producers have sent out an open casting call seeking a young boy to play LaBeouf’s famous son, but submissions are due by Monday, March 19.

Hedges is coming off supporting turns in a pair of Best Picture nominees — Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, not to mention his acclaimed performance in a third Best Picture nominee, Manchester by the Sea. He could find himself back in the Oscar race again next year, as he stars in Joel Edgerton’s gay conversion therapy drama Boy Erased.

Additionally, Hedges stars opposite Katherine Waterston in Jonah Hill’s upcoming directorial debut Mid ’90s, and the rising young actor has also wrapped his father Peter Hedges’ new film Ben Is Back, which pairs him with Julia Roberts. Lucas is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content and attorney Steve Breimer.

LaBeouf recently wrapped The Peanut Butter Falcon and will next be seen in Borg vs. McEnroe, which gets served up into theaters on April 13. He’s fantastic in the film, and he’s repped by CAA and John Crosby Management. Har’el is repped by WME and Independent Talent Group.

How is LeBeouf still repped by CAA at this point?

His next movie should have "Honey" in the title to complete the "Honey trilogy"

Noah Jupe, the breakout actor who played the son in John Krasinski's hit horror movie A Quiet Place, will play a young Shia LaBeouf in Honey Boy, the biopic being made by Automatik.

Lucas Hedges and LaBeouf are already on board for the indie, which was co-written by LaBeouf and tells, in a roman-a-clef style, a story about LaBeouf's relationship with his father at two different stages in his life: as a young boy starting out as an actor and a young man with a burgeoning career.

LaBeouf, the one-time Steven Spielberg protege who starred in the Transformers movies, got his big break acting on Disney Channel’s Even Stevens and has described ping-ponging between 12-step programs with his father, a former clown performer and recovering heroin addict, and the set. "Honey boy" was the nickname given to him by his father.

Hedges will play an Even Stevens-era LaBeouf. Jupe will play the actor at an earlier stage.

In a meta move, LaBeouf is playing his own father at both stages of the story. In more meta madness, LaBeouf co-wrote the script with Otis Lort, which he later admitted was a pseudonym. The actor character in the script is also named Otis Lort.

Alma Har’el is directing the project as well as acting as one of the producers. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones is producing via Automatik Entertainment along with Christopher Leggett of Delirio Films and Daniela Taplin Lundberg of Stay Gold Features. Automatik's Fred Berger is executive producing.

Endeavor Content put together the financing and will co-represent worldwide rights with CAA.

Jupe appeared on such TV shows as The Night Manager and Houdini and Doyle before making the jump to movies. He has been making a steady climb since, appearing in George Clooney’s Suburbicon; with Jacob Tremblay in the hit adaptation Wonder; and with Sam Worthington in the sci-fi movie Titan. A Quiet Place, which just crossed the $100 million mark domestically, features the actor as one of the four pillars of the film about a family under siege by aliens.

Jupe is repped by CAA, Grandview and Hansen Jacobson.

From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har'el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue) brings to life a young actor's stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health. Fictionalizing his ascent to stardom, and subsequent crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har'el casts Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased, Manchester by the Sea) as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Dancer-singer FKA twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har'el's feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope through the life and times of a talented, traumatized performer who dares to go in search of himself.

Coming to Theaters November 8, 2019!
at putting the trademark LaBeouf "no, no, no, no, no" in there.

It's a hard movie to watch knowing it's about Shia and the difficulty in his 'relationship' with his father. Everyone's performance is great and heart breaking at the same time. Thru this and all of his interviews. you can really see how writing this was part of that 12 step program to face himself and find the root cause of his problems. It's a brutaly honest film.

This along with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman are battling it out for my favorite movie of 2019. What a beautiful, heartbreaking, painful movie to watch. I hope some Oscar nom's come this films way.
