Written and Directed by Bo Burnham
Starring Elsie Fisher and Josh Hamilton

Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school—the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year—before she begins high school.

Release Date Jul 13, 2018
This premiered at Sundance. Lots of positive word on it. Currently 100% on RT: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/eighth_grade

I have been a fan of Bo Burnham since his YouTube days. Nice to see him branching out and garnering acclaim.

Yeah, I actually enjoy Bo Burnham, seeing his work distilled into movie format would be fun.

This will open limited this week. 97% on RT: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/eighth_grade

I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully, it makes it's way to my area soon. AMC is good with playing the A24 stuff.

Rated R? That seems a little odd. Was hoping it would be appropriate for my 6th and 8th graders.

6th and 8th grade aged kids use R rated language plenty. So that's probably why.

You can check here when it's released for details on what exactly: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/mov...s/eighth-grade

I was expecting this to star Ed Helms as a married man who returns to 8th grade for some stupid reason. Co starring some combination of useless hollywood actors and Charlie Day.

Just saw this and enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. (My 8th grade experience had a lot more rugby shirts and obsession with the Cure's Disintegration ) The fire pit scene in particular hit home and made me tear up some.

Solid debut from Burnham.

Having been a Middle/High School Teacher for the past 3 years, the film was honest in echoing a lot of what my students have either gone through or spoken to me about in our classes, namely being yourself/fitting in as well as making friends.

I absolutely loved the
Spoiler:
scene between Kayla & Gabe, eating Chicken Nuggets & talking about Rick & Morty. I laughed so hard at how hilarious & awkward that scene was.

I took my daughter to see this today and we both enjoyed it. It had a few moments that made both of us feel really uncomfortable. My only complaint is that they didn't nail what the mood of the kids would be like and what they would likely be doing during the last week of school.

I have a son going into 9th grade this year and we are both avid movie watchers. Would this be a good movie to take him to since he is at that age or is it a "grown-up, looking back," kind of movie that you only understand the nuances once you have been there?

Iíd actually be curious what a boy that age thinks of this movie, since it is from a female perspective.

I donít see any reason why not to see it together. Do you see R rated movies together usually? This was pretty tame.

Here's a better rating breakdown than the blanket R rating https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/eighth-grade

I was surprised at how well this captured 8th grade wartortling (what my kids use as a verb for adolescence--based on a pokemon that is neither cute nor strong, just an awkward in between). Even though the movie was good, I wanted out about 2 thirds through it, much like I wanted out of jr high.

Saw it with my 25 y/o daughter, who thought it might be more relatable to her, as she grew up with more technology. But nope, there is just something so universal about being an awkward adolescent (and being the parent of one).

Going this afternoon. I was in 8th grade in a totally different time period, but in terms of feeling awkward, that's universal for the age. I remember the last week of 8th grade being clock punching and getting told "things will be harder in high school" by everyone.

Caught this today. Definitely worth seeing. I will say that this movie makes me thankful that I came of age during a time where technology and social media was not the be all end all of your teenage life. The lead has real potential to be a star provided she doesn't take the Lindsey Lohan route.

I remember having a motivational speaker tell us that high school would be the best years of our life. I immediately thought it was a stupid thing to say. Fuck that guy.

I hear good things about this. Will probably watch it this week. School was so incredibly awkward for me that this might leave me devistated. Like a ptsd thing. I have no idea what happens.

I watched this today. It's a really well made film that gives an raw and unflinching look at adolescence today. I'm glad that I didn't watch it in the theater though. I had to pause it during some of the really awkward and uncomfortable moments and walk around the house before I could finish those scenes. 4/5

this was so well done and well executed. Both Josh Hamilton and Elsie Fisher didn't seem like they were acting. i felt like i was a docu almost, but went a way i was not expecting. really enjoyed this and the mall that was featured, especially when you saw the outside is my hometown. Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, NY. Really good movie and so well done on every level.

I heard good things and it exceeded my expectations.

A Oscar nomination for Elsie Fisher?

Has Bo Burnham directed any other movies? if they are as good as this I will check them out.

One complaint

Spoiler:
She never told her dad about the guy that made her uncomfortable in the car. Not sure if she took her shirt off since the whole scene was in darkness on my 2010 LCD TV.

Question, and maybe I'm misreading your opinion, but why would that be a complaint? Many young girls and women who are subjected to that type of behavior often go years without telling anyone. I loved the relationship between her and her father but she obviously had a hard time connecting with him throughout the film so it seems reasonable to me that she would not want to tell him about what happened in the car.

I thought maybe telling him would be another step in her development and something viewers would want to see.
