Casualties of War (1989)...great, good, poor war movie?

i've always liked ths one. seen it maybe twice and have the region free Bluray coming. also, have digital copy. i def. liked Penn more than Fox. Fox, little out of place. But, De Palma's style is always present, though different than most his stuff. will have to see soon to fully decide if i would rank in anals of great war movies...

so do you think of this movie in high regards of war movies?

Sean Penn's career worst acting performance. Not quite as over the top as Eric Roberts was in that era, but he's in the conversation. I didn't think much of the movie either. One of De Palma's weaker efforts.

This film always bugged me as a kid. Reducing the Vietnam experience down to a rape. Now, I guess you can say that rape is an allegory for the Vietnam war itself but it always felt too narrow and lacked the scope of Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and The Deer Hunter. Also Michael J. Fox was just totally wrong for the lead. One of those films you're just never able to fully immerse yourself in because you're just seeing the actor and not the character. Penn also overacts badly.

I agree, it's not a very tight race compared to other great war films. The idea of greatness itself would have to be blown wide open to include Casualties of War.

Wait. You've "always liked it", and you've seen it "maybe twice"? High praise indeed. Hell, I don't think it's that great and I've seen it at least 3 times.

Good movie for the scenes in the underground tunnel. That said, as much as I like Sean Penn, I agree with several others on this board, he did overact. Michael J. Fox was okay, but the whole movie seemed very overdramatic, to me. I did like John C. Reilly in the small role he had...This definitely pales in comparison to other Vietnam War movies, like Apocalypse Now, Platoon, etc...But it's not an entire waste...Like most De Palma movies, I didn't really like this at first but it's grown on me a bit...Which is why I said it was a "Good Movie"...No where near his great movies like Blow Out, Scarface, Sisters, Body Double, Dressed to Kill, Carrie, etc....but it was a pretty solid movie when you look at it today...Who the hell is releasing it as a region free Blu-Ray? I've always wanted to pick up a Blu-Ray of this movie so I can get rid of the DVD...

Its an average movie at best. Compared to Full Metal Jacket its a piece of shit. It gets respect these days because Tarantino always goes on about it, but i couldn't give a toss what that idiot thinks.

The best thing about this movie is actually from the documentary De Palma where he tells the story that Penn really tried to not get along with Fox on set to keep it real and in the scene where he walks out and you see him whispering in his ear he actually said to Fox to piss him off "TV Actor." That made me laugh.

I like it, but I don't love it. Then again I'm a sucker for Brian De Palma.

Michael J. Fox got top billing over Sean Penn? Must have been the Back to the Future effect.

They sure made a lot of Vietnam War movies in the 80s. What was the most recent major one? When We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson?

It's been probably 15-20 years since I've seen this. I remember enjoying it when I first saw it, but I suspect my next viewing will be much more critical as my tastes have grown more refined (i.e. I'm picky as hell nowadays).

I remember liking this a lot when I saw it in a theater 29 years ago. I loved the score and bought the soundtrack album (LP). I read the book it was based on. But it's not a feel-good movie. It was quite harrowing. I haven't seen it since, so I don't know how it holds up.

Always was on the fence after seeing this one as a kid. First time I ever saw it my thoughts were exactly what finisher posted.

But I do like it, it's definitely a "good" movie but has its faults.

Isn't Penn doing his best DeNiro impression in this movie?
