Favorite edge-of-your seat movies?

I was struck while watching Criterion’s bluray of Silence of the Lambs how damn suspenseful it is. The mood, the music, the acting so masterfully done. I’ve seen it before, but appreciate films more now...

Then I was wondering can any genre be considered edge-of-your seat? Suspense, thriller, action, mystery, maybe even romance as to will they or won’t they and how?

I mean Silence is clearly suspense, some mystery, teeny horror, but captivating and really holds your attention as if eoys.

I remember Die Hard and then The Abyss as only 2 theatrical movies I’ve seen that I was literally on the edge...

But, so many, even at home has that tension and riveting everything that keeps you glued and figuratively on the edge...

So what movies do/did it fit you?

I was definitely "edge-of-my-seat" the first time I watched Aliens...well actually, I find that's how I feel almost every time I watch that movie, that's how good it is...You could almost say the same thing when it comes to Ridley Scott's Alien...

Wolf Creek had me in a similar way...same thing with Wayne Kramer's Running Scared...

The Descent...that movie blew my mind the first time I watched it, and is one of the few movies that made me "jump" several times...

Funny Games...the original and the remake...

Irreversible and Enter the Void and I Stand Alone...All Noe movies...

Those are a few...Great topic...

I remember Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom being such an adrenaline rush in the theater. Was literally on the edge of my seat. It felt like it was 30 minutes long and when it was over I felt like I had been run over by stampeding elephants.

Three experiences in the theater come to mind, all first viewings:

In The Dark Knight, when
Spoiler:
Commissioner Gordon is "killed"
I remember being absolutely shocked. I whispered to my wife, "If they did that, anything can happen at this point, no one is safe. And later, guess what...

Similarly, I remember thinking over and over during The Departed, "I have no idea what's going to happen. I have no idea what's going to happen." And I sure did get plenty of shocking moments by the time it was over.

Finally, I still find Ronin to be a great adrenaline rush but that first time in the theater was an especially amazing thrill. The cup of coffee, the chases, the assassination countdown, I can almost get fooled still about what might happen next there are so many little moments.

I went to a Wilder retrospective and saw most of his films that way and I came away thinking Billy Wilder is the master of suspense, not Alfred Hitchcock. Especially his comedies.

The few times that come to mind for me when I was literally on the edge of my seat during a movie...

- Jurassic Park: the kitchen scene
- Gravity: several times throughout the movie
- Blair Witch Project: once they enter the house toward the end of the movie
- Se7en: the car ride/what's in the box?!

Blue Ruin was fantastic. His follow-up Green Room was also pretty intense. Not quite as good as his first film but still damn good...

Great call on Prisoners. The opening twenty minutes or so were especially harrowing...especially the RV scene at the gas station...

Watched It Comes At Night recently and it was great...

'71 was awesome. The main actor was great and it was basically a chase movie the entire duration...

Still have issues with how naive Emily Blunt's character was in Sicario, but can't deny that the opening scene and the extraction from Mexico were incredibly suspenseful...

Good picks...
