Chappaquiddick (2018, D: Curran) S: Clarke, Mara, Helms, Dern, Brown, Thirlby

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qG-c8DtOm9g" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In the riveting suspense drama, CHAPPAQUIDDICK, the scandal and mysterious events surrounding the tragic drowning of a young woman, as Ted Kennedy drove his car off the infamous bridge, are revealed in the new movie starring Jason Clarke as Ted Kennedy and Kate Mara as Mary Jo Kopechne. Not only did this event take the life of an aspiring political strategist and Kennedy insider, but it ultimately changed the course of presidential history forever. Through true accounts, documented in the inquest from the investigation in 1969, director John Curran and writers Andrew Logan and Taylor Allen, intimately expose the broad reach of political power, the influence of America's most celebrated family; and the vulnerability of Ted Kennedy, the youngest son, in the shadow of his family legacy.

There's another thread for this here: https://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk...n-thirlby.html

Mixed response so far on Rottentomatoes, but only a handful of votes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chappaquiddick/

The guy got drunk and drove his car into a river killing his passenger...end of story.
There is no big secret about any of this.
It's been known since it first happened.

Thanks. I had done a search before I posted, and I even used copy and paste to make sure I spelled it correctly, but it didn't show up.

No, that's not the end of the story.

Spoiler:

She didn't drown. She suffocated in a pocket of air. If he had called the police or fire station, there would have been plenty of time to save her. But he didn't do that. Instead, he called his lawyer. That's what the big deal is about.

I hate the Kennedy’s, Ted most of all, and even I think this movie looks lurid and distasteful.

I’m waiting for the sequel where Joe Kennedy has his daughter lobotomized for masturbating too much.

True...technically.
Still, there is no "big deal" NOW for those of us who remember it nearly 50 years later.

For those not around then it might be an interesting tale.

The guy was a real monster and a scumbag, and his kids paid the price.

I am not a big fan of movies regarding the Kennedy's, but I always enjoy Documentaries about them.

When will the movie about Laura Bush killing someone with her car be made?

A wild guess this movie will bomb since nobody goes to the theater to watch movies based on history.

Apollo 13 was a Oscar Nominated movie and was a box office hit in 1995.

You have to go back to 1995 lol

That was then but now if a movie is not based on a comic book it is hard to find a audience.

I don't think Dunkirk bombed last year and Darkest Hour did okay.

Ok, something more recent would be ‘Lincoln’ which grossed 182 million domestically.

Although I agree with you that the Blockbuster has changed over the years as the comic book movie, sequels and prequels dominate much of the calendar year these days.

Anyone else check this out?

Thought it was an engrossing look at this historical event. I wasn't alive when this happened and can honestly say I wasn't super familiar with all the details of what took place.

It was ok. Seemed kind of cheaply made though.

Saw this yesterday.

I thought the performances were solid (especially Clarke & Helms) but the script could have used some work, especially in framing more of who Mary Jo Kopechne was. The film was about 10-15 minutes too long and it lost a bit of steam for me in the final act.

Ted Kennedy is a slime-ball.

Oh I miss Howard's Ted Kennedy impression.
