Extinction (2018, D: Young) S: Peña, Caplan -- another studio bailout by Netflix
In the latest Hollywood rights deal for Netflix, the streaming service has acquired worldwide rights for the sci-fi thriller “Extinction” from Universal — two months after Universal pulled it off its schedule.
Netflix plans to release “Extinction” later this year. The company confirmed the move to Variety on Thursday, four days after it began streaming J.J. Abrams’ “The Cloverfield Paradox” following the Super Bowl, and two weeks after sources said Netflix was buying the rights of what was then called “God Particle” from Paramount.
The film stars Michael Pena (“Ant-Man”) and Lizzy Caplan (“Now You See Me 2,” “Allied”) as a husband and wife. His character has a recurring nightmare of losing his family and that bad dream becomes a reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep his family safe from harm.
“Luke Cage’s” Mike Colter, Lilly Aspell, Emma Booth, Israel Broussard, and Lex Shrapnel also star. Ben Young directed from a script by Spenser Cohen and Bradley Caleb Kane. Mandeville’s Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman produced the film. Production companies are Good Universe and Mandeville Films.
Paramount previously made a deal with Netflix in December for the streaming service to handle the international release of Natalie Portman’s horror-thriller “Annihilation.” The studio will release the movie in North America on Feb. 23.

I'm betting all of the studios will be looking at their upcoming slates for movies that don't look like such good returns on their production and potential distribution investments. Of course, outside of mega-franchise pictures that's probably almost everything.

I’m hoping for a Luis (Ant-Man) style prologue to set up the movie.
Damn man, before mankind was here, there was these aliens who were living here all happy on Earth. Then the dinosaurs died and one day man evolved from monkeys. I’m still rooting for Marvel to give Pena a 30-45 minute special to recap the entire MCU leading up to Avengers 5/IW 2.

They've definitely become a dumping ground. Direct-to-Video tho is now Direct-to-VOD, like Escape Plan 2: Hades.

Huh. This was interesting. I'm not sure what else to say that won't say too much ... worth a watch but it won't change your world. I went into it blind (did not watch the trailer), so I don't know if that helped.

Yeah, I thought this was a good little sci-fi action flick with a twist that worked.

This was a nice little surprise. I guessed the first part of the twist, but not the second. Pretty clever. Definitely worthy of a watch.
I can kind of see why the studio didn't want this to go out theatrically. It was missing something... I don't know. Maybe they could've asked Jason Blum to throw his name on it and it could've done alright. Reviews aren't very kind to this one.

I kept trying to figure it out too, Dex. What was this missing? It didn’t feel like something that I would sit through in a theater, but I enjoyed watching it at home.
The special effects were good enough (save for the epilogue), so that wasn’t the problem.
It had “name” actors and everybody did fine, so that wasn’t it.
I think there was something missing from the writing, but I can’t put my finger on it. It made sense, it flowed just fine ... but it just didn’t feel like a big screen story. Maybe the marketing materials help point to the shortfall — the synopsis doesn’t really match up with the movie, IMO. The tag line on the poster provides a bit of a red herring. The trailer shows
scenes, but doesn’t really explain the premise.
I don’t know if this is even making sense.
Just watch the movie!

Not bad. I suspect they tried to do too much with too little budget.
It’s also a case where the film crew just couldn’t bring it together to make it look and feel like a big screen movie. I’ve never been able to figure out how one movie ends up like ... say 28 Days Later. And the next movie with similar scope ends up like this ... complete with the DTV look. Are there any essays or books on this idea?
