The divide seems to be between people who first saw it as children, and those of us who first saw it as an adult. I thought it was the sort of blunt force sentimentality that most people block from their social media.

I watched ET growing up and really liked it, but mostly because it was a phenomenon.

I watched it again as a freshman in college and balled my eyes out. I was old enough to realize what it was really about.

I had a similar reaction. E.T. Is one of those Moscow’s I saw a lot as a kid and I never really cared for it. Years passed and I finally rewatched it around the time the original DVD was released. It was so much more moving watching it as an adult than it was as a kid.

Brazil. I like most of the other Terry Gilliam movies I've seen, but not this one. I first watched it 15 years ago. I've never revisited it.

You should feel shame over this. Brazil is the second best movie of all time behind Blade Runner. Shame I say.

I have not seen it but A Star is Born (2018) looks like a movie the masses like but I might find boring.

I actually kind of agree with you on this one. It has some visually interesting ideas, but I was never hooked by the story. Just felt like a bunch of weird scenes pasted together. I remember purchasing the Criterion DVD 3-Disc Boxset when it first came out, as it was hyped as being maybe the best DVD package at the time...It was nice to see the different cuts and compare them, but overall I wasn't that impressed. The bonus documentary and commentaries were more interesting than the movie, I thought. That said, I love a lot of other Gilliam movies, especially 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Time Bandits, to an extent...

Re: Ever Been the A$$hole Who Didn't Like the Movie..

I find it's actually pretty difficult to find a movie that just about everyone can like and appreciate. I thought Rear Window was one of those few and suggested it to my cousin. He didn't like it at all thought it was too boring. So he's that asshole.

Your cousin is just an idiot. There are plenty of movies that people of every age (who aren’t idiots) can agree on. Everybody loves Singin’ In the Rain, Jaws, Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

The Big Lebowski
Reservoir Dogs
GoodFellas
Lost in Translation
Any Wes Anderson movie
Any movie with Wallace & Gromit-style animation. The aesthetic creeps me out.

Freddy Mercury didn't like Star Wars (or Jaws). He just wanted to ride his bicycle.

They are unequivocally good films by any and all measure. And they have stood the test of time.

It took me awhile to get what you were talking about.

For future reference it's spelled baWLED.

When it comes to movie tastes for Rear Window for sure. I still say that there are few movies with that mass appeal especially compared to how many movies there are. I would add: The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, The Shawshank Redemption (not every age for that one), The Lion King, Toy Story. So there are a few.

I agree with you, however, as much as I am a Star Wars fan I totally get that it's not for everyone. There are some people that just don't get/like science fiction/fantasy. Same with LotR, I'm a huge fan but a lot of people just don't get it. Even though I listed some, there are people who are dismissive of cartoons as well. So I think there is a big difference between a great classic movie and one that has nearly universal appeal and those are truly few and far between.

I'm a little clueless. What is it really about?

For me that happened with Mary Poppins. As a kid it was all the music and spectacle and them doing silly things. But as an adult and father I finally realized (with the help of Saving Mr. Banks) that the true core of the movie was all about Mr. Bank's relationship with his children. How it's so easy to get wrapped up in career and other things and how short childhood really is. It definitely makes me tear up now.

Re: Ever Been the A$$hole Who Didn't Like the Movie..

ET is actually about the children of a family, especially the middle son, coping with divorce. Spielberg’s parents divorced when he was a kid. The alien, and the scientist hunting him (played by Peter Coyote) are surrogate father figures that help the boy reconcile his feelings, find inner strength, rebel, do the right thing, and sacrifice for others.

I always remind people that the last shot of the film is not a shot of ET “going home”. It’s a shot of the boy. And Henry Thomas has a look on his face that tells us all that he is going to be okay.
