Yawn. Spielberg hasn't made a movie that I genuinely cared for or am interested in since Munich in 2005.

I have no interest in this. At. All.

I mean, make it or don’t, I don’t really care. Just don’t Bogart MY directors to do it!!

With the success of The Greatest Showman, you'll probably see an increase in musicals.

I was wondering what a new production could bring to the piece that wasn’t in the classic original film, then I saw that they wanted a Latina to play Maria and that the leads “Must Be Able to Sing”.

Are we sure that isn't a gag poster?

I thought so too, but EW reported on it, and Kushner’s husband tweeted about it.

Supposedly he was deciding between doing this and Indy 5 next.

Seems like an easy decision to me, but I guess not. He chose...poorly.

Two years in a row with two "original" musicals cracking $100m+ bodes well for the genre. Though I see Beauty and the Beast is considered a musical as well, and that hit $500m.

I think at one time Spielberg was developing this as an animated movie with cats.

Indy 5 already has a release date of July 10, 2020. Can he sneak this in and still have Indy 5 done for that date?

Minority Report came out in June 2002, Catch Me If You Can came out in December 2002. He seems pretty good at time management.

(Minority Report filmed from March 22nd '01 - July 18th '01, CMIYC from 11 February 2002 - 4 May 2002)

I've said this before here : Movies are different than Broadway. People don't go to live-action movie musicals to watch actors sing. They go to watch MOVIE STARS sing. Casting unknowns will be a huge mistake here, and possibly in Aladdin as well.
The movie musicals that were hits had stars in the leads - Chicago, Les Miz, Beauty and the Beast, Mama Mia, La La Land and Greatest Showman all had bankable stars. You put in unknowns (or barely knowns) and you end up with Rent, Jersey Boys or Phantom of the Opera -- bombs.

I am imagining a hip hop/rap soundtrack and getting sick.

If they change the Jets & the Sharks into the Aryan Brotherhood & the Latin Kings, I might be interested.

They should scrap this and just do HBO's Oz: The Musical

Hope this doesn't get off the ground. There are better projects that the money and talent can be spent on.

(Unless, of course, it's in 3D. Then, I'm there!)

The original holds up pretty well, but the Brownface is definitely problematic.

And in this case, they're calling for much of the cast to be 15-25. How many bonafide movie stars are there in that age range, regardless of ethnicity? Unless they think Selena Gomez and/or Ariana Grande are latin enough, they're not casting stars.

I'm glad to see Spielberg finally do that musical. I just wish it were something else.

Well, it was probably just a coincidence but it was hard to miss that 24 year old Tony winner Benjamin Platt of Dear Evan Hansen just sang the HELL out of "Somewhere" on the Grammys last night. No way Spielberg doesn't take notice of that.

I can't picture him as Tony at all. Riff maybe.
