Yeah that feels very much like the textbook definition of a thread crap.

Nah. just messing around. My favorite musical of the last 20 years is actually Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I like the original WSS but have no idea why SS would want to remake this. It looks meh, IMO.

re: West Side Story (2021, D: Spielberg)

Reviews have got me kind of pumped. Don't love the majority of musicals but when they hit they really hit for me so always down to give them a shot.

What's the big number for this if there is one? I'm pretty ignorant beyond it being two gangs and people snapping behind the leaders of the pack in unison en route to a clash.

Maybe because it is one of the greatest Broadway musicals, but the movie version, which is how most people will experience it, is 60 years old and it shows. The staging and visuals are flat by modern standards. I'm sure there's some stuff in there that is now considered offensive. And Natalie Wood was not Latina and did not do her own singing.

The 1961 movie is considered great because the source material is so strong, but it is not an example of great movie musical entertainment that will engage contemporary audiences.

Thanks! Made a playlist and will give them a few listens before the movie. Previous film soundtrack an acceptable version or better to go Broadway?

Impressive reviews. Is this the front runner for Best Picture?

I'd say so. Would this be the first instance where a film remake of a film that won Best Picture also wins Best Picture?

I can't even think of another example of a BP winner remake being nominated. Or even many getting made as a feature film. Not since 1960.

re: West Side Story (2021, D: Spielberg)

Pre-1960 here are the ones with theatrical remakes, IFAIK
Ben Hur
Rebecca (Netflix)
Hamlet (several times, of course)
Mutiny on the Bounty (twice)

And since 1960, only West Side Story has been remade.

None were winners but Cleopatra, Les Miserables, and A Star is Born were remakes nominated for BP when the original was nominated as well.

All Quiet on the Western Front
All the King's Men
Cimarron

Neither Variety nor Gold Derby has WSS as #1 in their Best Picture power rankings, but that could change once audiences have a chance to see the movie.

Grace Randolph, who admittedly tries to put a positive spin in her reviews, said it's Spielberg's best movie since Jaws.

Thatís pretty high praise. Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Saving Private Ryan, etc.

Schindlerís List is #8 on AFIís greatest movies of all time for crying out loud. So I guess this would rank right around #7Ö.Lawrence of Arabia.

Actually, she says it is his "best work since Jaws," and in the context of the review, which she explains earlier, she means that like Jaws it is a masterclass in how to tell a story cinematically.

Possible.

But Licorice Pizza will give it a run for its money.

Maybe but NBR has made some wacky choices in the recent past and only three winners of their Best Film award this century have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar (No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, Green Book).
Care to guess which movie won their top award last year?
Spoiler:
Da 5 Bloods

re: West Side Story (2021, D: Spielberg)

Glad to see the rave reviews for this, I'm not a big musical fan but I'm definitely more interested now... so, it'll have the premium screens for one week before Spidey?

Spielberg is definitely slowing down, I don't anticipate him working like Ridley Scott is into his 80's. Could this actually be his final film?

No. He is already wrapped on a semi-autobiographical film that comes out next year. https://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk...ogen-dano.html

re: West Side Story (2021, D: Spielberg)

I wonder if Sondheim was able to see it before he passed, and if so, what he thought of it.
I didn't have high hopes for this remake, especially because of Elgort, but now I'm really wanting to see it.
WSS is my favorite Broadway show and I do love the original film.
