Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

I think this is the first year (since they expanded the number) that I saw over half of the Best Picture nominees.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

I know she was technically a lead, but Vicky Krieps deserved a nomination over Lesley Manville for Phantom Thread.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

Blade Runner 2049 was deserving of Best Picture and definitely Best Director nominations. Far more than Dunkirk.

"Get Out" just went from surprising gem to massively overrated.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

No directing nomination for Three Billboards (I agree with this) makes me wonder how far it'll get.

Also for Logan getting a screenplay nom and Baby Driver on editing.

And Netflix did pretty well, Mudbound got 4 noms, Icarus (doc) got 1 and Strong Island (doc) got 1 as well. Apparently Mudbound is the first time a female cinematographer has been nominated.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

Not surprising since he didn't get a Golden Globe nod, but I'm disappointed Harry Dean Stanton didn't get nominated for Lucky. Dead or alive, I thought he deserved it.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

I wonder if Get Out got the Best Picture genre nod over Blade Runner 2049. Maybe it was a combination of that and under performing at box office.

With Mad Max Fury Road getting a BPN I thought BR2049 could easily slide into that role this year.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

McDonagh not getting nominated for director makes me think Shape of Water is now the favorite for BP. I've thought it was a two-horse race all along, I don't think any of the other films have enough momentum to win it.

Didn't expect Franco to miss out, even with the allegations. When did Casey Affleck's stuff come out? Seemed to be around Oscar time too, and it didn't affect him. Possible I'm misremembering it.

"Oscar-nominated The Boss Baby" is a phrase now.

At this point, nominating Streep every year is just getting embarrassing.

Is the Academy still using their “up to 10 BP nomination” rules? If so there would have been one open slot for BladeRunner 2049.

The anti-male movement had far less momentum when Affleck won.

And with that said, I full expect Greta Gerwig to win for Best Director.

Not that I put much stock in the Oscars, but it's nice to see PTA getting so many Phantom Thread nominations.

Didn't feel much when looking over the nominees. I don't have a real strong rooting interest for anyone or anything.

I wouldn’t count Daniel Day-Lewis out just yet. Especially with this being widely known as his swan song.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

Wonder what's stopping the Academy from nominating 10 films for best picture instead of the usual 9. I think they only nominated 10 films for best picture the year after they announced they were doing expanding the list of nominations.

They can nominate from five to ten. It doesn't HAVE to be ten every year.

Re: 2018 Oscar Nominations

nominated films must earn either 5% of first-place rankings or 5% after an abbreviated variation of the single transferable vote nominating process.
