Joaquin Phoenix stars in You Were Never Really Here, an adaptation of the novel written by Jonathan Ames, written and directed by Lynne Ramsay.

A traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.

Arrives in select theaters April 6.

89% on RT. Supposed to come out this weekend. I'm going to be annoyed if no theaters in my area are showing it.

They showed the trailer front of A Quiet Place and the crowd reacted well. So did I. I'll see it at the show. It's at the Hollywood Arclight, though, so don't know if I want to go make the trek there.

I was able to get to this and it was okay. It's a really short film, but has a slow burn to it. There some very violent spurts here and there, but most of the violence is somewhat implied outside of the few spurts of it, if that makes sense. I've never seen any of Lynne Ramsey's films, so I will definitely have to rectify that. I got an overall Drive and Oldboy vibe as opposed to a Taxi Driver one.

I just started reading the book the film is based on (by Jonathan Ames, writer of the HBO series "Bored To Death"), and it's only like 120 pages or so in length.

Weird how that goes with the rights and all. There's new movie out here called "Death of Stalin" or something similar - it's a satire -- and that thing has been out on BD in the UK for quite a while.

Brilliant and brutal arthouse exploitation from Lynn Ramsey. Someone give Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar already. One of the year’s best. Not for all tastes, especially those unfamiliar with the director’s previous films.

Very interesting to have what would normally be a typical action plot and put the arthouse spin on it.

Johnny Greenwood's score was on point.
