Saw this last week.

I really enjoyed Joaquin Phoenix's performance but the style of the narrative didn't quite click with me.

The film definitely has the most creepy use of the song 'Angel Baby' by Rosie & The Originals.

Saw this today. Liked it. Not for everyone. Very dark/haunting. Very haunting score. Very seedy feel. Dug it.

Haven't seen any Lynne Ramsay stuff. I've been meaning to see We Need to Talk About Kevin, never got around to it. Is her stuff usually like this movie? Don't mind, just curious.

I thought We Need To Talk About Kevin was pretty good, but somewhat disappointing. Morvern Callar was a chore to sit through, a painfully boring film. Her first film, Ratcatcher is pretty close to being a masterpiece. Hell maybe it is. Either way it's still her best film. I thought YWNRH was fantastic, but sooooooo bleak. I don't know if I'd be up for watching it again. Not for awhile at least.

A great performance by Phoenix wasted in an arty-farty wannabe movie by a Director way in over her head, who is short on talent and short on vision....I want my hour and a half back.

Not exactly how I would have put it, but I can't say I disagree. I was thankful that I only wasted 90 minutes of my life on this movie, and it was a library rental

There was a decent movie in there somewhere, but the Director failed to bring it out.
Oh well, so it goes...

Sounds perhaps like you didn't understand the character being portrayed.
I've read the book and not yet seen the movie, but I can tell you why the character looks the way he does. He's a walking embodiment of PTSD, half-dead already from all he's seen and gone through.

Characters IN movies can only be judged by how they are portrayed in the movie, not books.

Ummmm, I guess you're not familiar with Commodus from RS's Gladiator...

Re: You Were Never Really Here (D: Lynne Ramsay) S: Joaquin Phoenix

It was ok but overrated.

Really slow and not a lot of dialogue.

If the vision or dream at the end in the cafe really happened it would have capped off a mostly depressing movie.

Re: You Were Never Really Here (D: Lynne Ramsay) S: Joaquin Phoenix

Just watched this on Prime ... I've not seen Ramsay's other works.

I have to say I am in agreeance with some of the later comments here. I just didn't click with this film. There is a better movie trapped in this attempt to make an arthouse hitman film. The filmmaking was competent and the acting was pretty damn good, but the script missed a few needed beats.

That is a perfect example. Ramsay chooses to give us quick flashbacks within a few frames. I don't need to be beat over the head with characterization, but there are better ways to have accomplished this that would have brought more depth to the character. As it was, I really didn't care about him. I got the backstory, but made no emotional connection or investment in the character. Honestly, he came off as more of a loser in the beginning than somebody who was broken.

I liked her choices with the violence, but I don't necessarily agree with all the praise being heaped on the choices being made. It worked very well in the scene where the security cameras are in constant rotation (loved that!), but the continued choice of keeping the violence just off camera started to feel a little forced. If you want to see an expert at handling violence in films, look at the works of Jeremy Saulnier.

One last thumbs up for Ramsay: I loved the scene in the kitchen where Joe lays down.

B - or 3.5 / 5
