Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

So I recently discovered this because of some YouTubers I watch putting it on their best of 2017 lists and holy shit this movie is fantastic. First of all itís completely free to watch and is available on YouTube from the creators. Itís not just some poorly produced fan film but a legitimately well made one. This is the kind of movie Paramount should be making rather than whatever the hell it is theyíre doing (or not doing) with the franchise. Itís very simplistic but effective and feels more like a Friday the 13th film than some of the official entries in my honest opinion. Itís also relatively short (clocks in at about fifty-three minutes) so if youíre a fan of the franchise or just good horror films Iíd say you owe it to yourself to at least give it a watch.

Synopsis: A hiker's survival skills are put to the test, when he stumbles upon the remains of an old abandoned camp and discovers its long dark secrets.

I still don’t get how putting a disclaimer up like that means anything just because it’s “not for profit”. Maybe I’m missing something like a legal loophole.

This has nothing to do with the movie you posted, I’m actually looking forward to watching it since you seem to have pretty good taste in films, and at the very least I respect your well-written thoughts on this forum.

Itís been up since October so Iím not sure how the legalities work but it hasnít been taken down or anything. The YouTube link I posted is the account from the creators not a re-upload.

Also thereís a cool Easter egg at the end of the film so avoid spoilers if possible (namely the IMDB page).

Re: Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

While I appreciated the effort and the last half was ok, and the ending quite decent, I simply cannot recommend the movie because the hiker is all over the place with his acting.

The scenes of him running and jumping around on his hike were laughable and didn’t come off as tough, even though he said he was a tough hiker. His unrealistic delivery of lines, from a script that contained a main character that goes beyond overexplaining everything single thing, was making it very boring and not suspenseful. Maybe there are YouTuber types out there who really talk this way, I don’t care for many GoPro type stuff, but it felt extremely fake. I know it’s a fan film, but I felt like I could have grabbed a camera and did a better job with this, and I have no formal acting or camera work training. His facial expressions alone made this hard to watch.

When the action did get going, the hiker felt like he was just arbitrarily a match for Jason. I just didn’t buy those “fight scenes”. Was the movie trying to make Jason a flesh and blood human being? Because while he was portrayed like the later series type of Jason, the hiker felt like his equal, and that doesn’t make for a good Jason film. The camera work wasn’t too bad, but it was too action filmy for my tastes.

Again, maybe I’m being too critical, but the only actor worth a damn I can’t say without spoiling the movie. I kind of knew within the first five minutes how the movie was going to be, and it would have worked better with some additional editing and losing a good 15 minutes of the guy walking, jumping around and pretending he’s a hiker when that stuff just didn’t work.

Re: Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

I thought the guy was pretty good. I mean considering this is a fan film and he’s not a Hollywood actor for one thing. I felt like he was at least as good or better than actors you see in horror films and especially low budget ones. As far as him over explaining things I think that was because his character is supposed to be a vlogger or something and probably documents his hikes for YouTube or whatever. That’s probably also why he didn’t seem tough because he’s probably just a guy who thinks he knows more than he does but really is an amateur with a YouTube channel.

Also I kind of liked how this was a more grounded Jason rather than the zombie incarnation we saw in the later films. My only complaint is I’m not sure how that would fit into the timeline considering something that happens in the movie but I can excuse it because it’s not an official entry.

I think the big thing to remember is this isn’t a professionally done film and had a low budget (I believe only like forty or fifty thousand) and a small crew. It’s easy to be critical comparing to other professionally made films but when you consider its fan made I found it impressive.

Re: Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

Like I said, I’m probably too critical, but I’m betting a porn parody Friday the 13th would have been better acted.

The two paramedics, one who talks about bush without a blink from his female co-worker? What was that?

It also just wasn’t scary. Like at all. It’s a step up from a middle school play perhaps.

Re: Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

The paramedics were clearly supposed to be acting badly in my opinion. The guy who made the bush comment is a stereotypical 80s hornball perv type character and he even had the same name as one of the characters from The Final Chapter (Axel).

I felt like the film was atmospheric enough. Not incredibly scary but Iím pretty desensitized to horror that not much really gets to me. I felt like Jason (who was also played by the director) was imposing enough and there was some decent tension at certain moments. The gore effects and the stunt work was decent too. Also there were some pretty cool camera shots such as when we got the close up of Jasonís eye hole and it fades into a shot of the moon in the sky.

I definitely feel like this is above something like a porn parody. Iím not saying itís a perfect film and maybe Iím more forgiving of it for being a fan film but I was impressed by it.

Re: Never Hike Alone (Friday the 13th Fan Film)

Bumping my old thread. Womp Stomp Films who did Never Hike Alone released another short film that serves as a prequel. The prequel is called Never Hike in the Snow. Havenít gotten a chance to watch it yet, but Iím definitely looking forward to giving it a watch a little later. Itís on YouTube and is linked for anyone who wants to check it out.

I mean for fan films I feel like theyíre pretty good. The first maybe is a bit better. I like Never Hike in the Snow too, but I wish it was longer. Definitely a cool setting for Jason though with the snowy woods and campground.

There doesnít really need to be a massive budget for these to be effective. Iíve heard thereís supposed to be four more installments.

Spoiler:
Plus getting Thom Mathews to reprise his role as Tommy Jarvis in both fan films is a cool touch.
